Why Choose GSI as Your Rock Anchor Contractor

  • Turnkey Design-Build: In-house geotechnical engineers and rope-access crews provide one accountable partner from assessment through installation.
  • Rapid Mobilization: Nationwide coverage ensures fast response for emergency projects and tight construction windows.
  • Specialized Access: Rope access, compact and limited-access drills, casing systems, and helicopter logistics enable work in steep or remote locations.
  • Engineered Certainty: Bar and strand anchors with verified free and bond lengths, corrosion protection, and acceptance testing.
  • Safety and Quality Management: Work-at-height, traffic-control, and anchor testing programs that meet or exceed industry standards.

What Are Rock Anchors?

Rock anchors, also known as rock bolts when untensioned, are steel bar or strand elements installed in drilled holes to transfer load into competent rock.

Untensioned Dowels or Bolts

Fully grouted bars that pin blocks or wedges and integrate with mesh or shotcrete to prevent raveling and detachment.

Post-Tensioned Anchors

Bar or multi-strand systems with defined free and bond lengths, tensioned to actively clamp rock masses, resist overturning, and secure foundations or rockfall barrier posts.

Permanent anchors include double corrosion protection and encapsulation systems designed for long service life.

How GSI Designs and Installs Rock Anchors

  • Assessment and Modeling: Geological mapping, kinematic analysis, and consequence modeling to determine anchor loads and spacing.
  • Design-Build Engineering: Selection of bar or strand type, bond lengths, corrosion protection, bearing plates, and head details to meet design-life requirements.
  • Access and Drilling: Rope-access crews and limited-access drills with down-the-hole or top-hammer methods for steep or confined sites.
  • Grouting and Tensioning: Cement or resin grouting as specified, followed by calibrated tensioning for active anchors; installation of mesh, shotcrete, or barrier components as required.
  • Testing and Verification: Proof, performance, and creep testing, lift-off checks, and as-built documentation with maintenance guidance.

Integration with Rockfall Systems

Pinned Mesh: Anchors clamp mesh to the rock face to prevent block movement and surface weathering.

Draped Mesh: Crest and toe anchors guide debris to engineered catchments for safe containment.

Fences and Attenuators: Anchors provide verified foundations to resist dynamic post and net loads.

Client Reviews

Rockfall Mitigation in Virginia

I wish I had been smart enough to let you design the rock mitigation. You and your team turned in an excellent performance. The work ethic of your team impressed everyone on our side of the table. Most companies print a slogan on their company clothing. However, your folks demonstrated every hour that they “Work Hard or Go Home”. You sent us a world class construction team – thanks!

Rockfall Mitigation and Removal in Wyoming

Richard, I wanted to take a quick minute and thank you and Courtney and the awesome crew that you sent here to take care of our huge rock. Courtney, John, and Andrew are some of the hardest working people I have had the privilege to be around. Their attention to safety professionalism, and never quit attitude was amazing to watch. Even when things did not go our way they were committed to finishing the job. I appreciate you sending these great guys to help us out and look forward to the opportunity to work with you again in the future.

Emergency Rockfall Mitigation for Mining Operations

I recently interacted with some of your rockfall division guys. I have never seen an outfit as competent on safety measures nor any contractors who worked as hard as your guys do. During the work, I was in a room with your guys and some other contractors, and your guys were head and shoulders above the rest in all aspects.
