Shoreline Stabilization

EARTH RETENTION SOLUTIONS

What is shoreline stabilization?

Shoreline stabilization is the process of protecting and stabilizing the land and water interface of a shoreline from erosion, wave action, and other natural or man-made forces. It is a critical aspect of coastal management and is often necessary to protect shorelines from damage caused by storms, floods, and rising sea levels. Shoreline stabilization types include:

Coastal and Bluff Shoreline Stabilization

GeoStabilization’s tools and techniques are uniquely suited for coastal and bluff zones. In highly corrosive environments, launched fiberglass soil nails and fiberglass SuperNails™ are often used. Launched nails can be perforated to act as drains or pressure grouted with cementitious or non-cementitious materials to improve soil properties in the nail zone. Because our work typically is conducted from above the slide area, environmental damage to sensitive areas can be avoided, and regulatory permits may not be required.

Riparian and Rivers

Inland rivers with steep slopes and adjacent infrastructures, such as our road and highway network, account for many slope failures across the United States. Some of our patented / trademarked equipment and processes used to repair these failures include our Soil Nail Launcher™, SuperNail™ Design and Installation Services, BioWall® facings, Scour Micropiles™, and Geosynthetically Confined Soils® services.

Once the riparian or river area is stabilized, various surface treatments can be installed, from sculpted and stained shotcrete to bioengineered facings. These techniques also can be applied to levees and reservoir embankments. At most sites, our crews will access the slope from above with no adverse environmental impact to the coastal or riparian areas below. Additionally, our highly maneuverable SPIDER Excavators, employing biodegradable operating fluids, allow our crews to literally cross streams and crawl up slopes to access difficult-to-reach areas.

Ports and Harbors

GeoStabilization’s fully engineered solutions readily mitigate geohazard instabilities in our nation’s ports and harbors. The schematic below illustrates many of our solutions including sinkhole stabilization, ground bearing capacity improvement, ground settlement control, landslide repair, sea wall repair, and foundation improvement with micropiles.

Dams and Reservoirs

GeoStabilization’s fully engineered solutions readily mitigate geohazard instabilities in our nation’s dams and reservoirs. GeoStabilization performs a wide range of slope mitigation for dams and reservoirs which typically have difficult accessibility and limited working space. However, our highly maneuverable (i.e., SPIDER’s) and lightweight equipment allows us to navigate dams and reservoirs from above with no environmental impact to the dams/reservoirs or from below using a variety of amphibious craft.

Many of the dams and reservoirs have many adjacent unstable rock slopes. GeoStabilization’s personnel will review the slope’s analysis data, including rockfall trajectory and energy modeling, and choose the best solution for customers specific rock slope mitigation. Rockfall mitigation for dams includes rockfall control, rockfall containment, rockfall barriers, and rock scaling.
