I would like this to be a letter of appreciation and gratitude on a job well done. Our house was first threatened by a landslide back in June, 2017 and it has been a journey that has been both stressful and scary. And yet, every cloud has a silver lining and in this case the support, encouragement and character of everyone we met from GSI has indeed been a gift throughout this journey. GSI was recommended by Steve Pawlak and we met Nathan Thompson early on. Nathan is a person who inspires trust and our first impression was verified throughout the process that led to a retaining system that has saved our house. As with everyone, and I mean everyone we met, we felt we had a group of people who were on our side. There were challenges that were overcome; the patience needed along with several visits to get the project underway, a renegotiated plan and bid when the insurance settlement squeezed the payment amount, and a time crunch that led to a change in plans where the panels were poured on the hillside, that allowed for the project to be started as quickly as possible. The crew that showed up to do the work was respectful, always ready to explain what was happening and was also timely, hard working and ready to go the extra mile. A great group of people with positive attitudes who seemed to genuinely work well together. Watching Spike work on that excavator was awe inspiring. One of my favorite moments was filming him on my phone to show my office secretaries at the Elementary School. I recorded a "holy shit" without knowing it when he pulled off an amazing stunt coming off a ledge and then being horrified when that came out while I was sharing the video at school. I was able to laugh later. Thank you again and if I can ever serve as a reference, please let me know.

I inspected today, great job. …. Boden is a great asset to your team as well. My wife and I live in Ohio and we are residential clients of GSI. Your team has been securing our lakefront cliff face over the past two weeks. I am writing you today to commend you on your outstanding team members. We had three rows of soil nails installed across about a 170' cliff edge overlooking Lake Erie. These were connected with a steel mesh, and the shotcrete facing is being finished as I write. We have been nothing but pleased with the results. In general, I can tell you that your crew has been dependable, respectful, friendly, polite, and quiet (at least as quiet as they can be). They have been flexible in their plans, and they have worked extremely hard. They even clean up after themselves after work each day. I have to say that I wasn't sure what to expect, but we have been pleasantly surprised. The project manager, Jared McDowell, has really kept the project moving -- they will finish almost a week early. There have been some roadblocks along the way - like locating a private underground natural gas pipeline in the yard and dealing with trouble getting machinery due to hurricanes - but Jared found a way to keep things going in the right direction. He was personable, and he listened to our concerns and answered our questions. I also appreciate the fact the he never gave the impression that he was too busy to talk to us. The other primary crew members Dylan Battaglia, Michal Kopij, Aaron Cordova are tremendous workers and nice guys. We would gladly work with them again if the need ever arose. I would also like to make a special note about our project development engineer, Greg Bachman. Thank goodness for him. We live at the end of a cul-de-sac, and we needed written permission from our neighbor to cross part of his lawn. Let's just say that our neighbor is a challenging person, and leave it at that. Greg spent several weeks meeting with different local engineering firms because our neighbor trusted their opinions and would not sign until the local firms saw our plans. I think most other compaines would have bailed at that point, but Greg stuck with us. Greg then had a face to face meeting with our neighbor and even agreed to have the GSI legal team simplify the contract language for Al's benefit. He also managed all the dealings with the city for permitting and the SWPPP plans. We are so grateful to have the GSI solution implemented as it was really the only cost-effective option available to us -- other than letting our property fall into Lake Erie. Greg went WAY above and beyond, and we can't thank him enough. I told Greg that if he ever needs a reference, we are here for him. This has been a really long endeavor, and we are so pleased to have the solution in place. It is a great feeling to know that our family and friends will be able to enjoy the view and feel completely safe. Thank you for your solution and congratulations on fielding a great team. Mining Customer in Canada on Rockfall Mitigation & Scaling Project

Hey Trevor, I gotta [sic] admit, I was a little worried after our progress on the first day of scaling. I wondered if I’d missed something in analyzing that slope! However, on day two, the guys were able to get the bulk of the loose material down in the two areas I was concerned about. They also installed two prisms into the blocks adjacent to the areas scaled so we can monitor any changes in the slope. The team who came to site were the epitome of professional, not to mention a lot of fun to work with. There was never any point where I felt they were working unsafely. I am most impressed with the entire operation. I think we were able to remove 100% of the immediate hazard for that area, and 75-80% of the overall hazard. Job well done!

In addition to confined quarters inside the building we had extreme weather conditions taking place outside the building.  My client was on a critical path timeline and this required GSI to return the week between Christmas and New Year’s. I knew that this was a mandatory week off for GSI but your organization came through, no ifs, ands or buts. 1.) The job superintendent, Ian Turner, handled himself remarkably. He was professional and no matter what the situation he took ownership. 2.) Every person on my job site with GSI had an extraordinary attitude. Every single person on this project is welcome to work on my projects anytime! 3.) Jarrod Hartshorn was as stated in your company policies willing to communicate 24/7. He answered his phone night or day and if he didn’t in a short while I could expect a phone call.  Jarrod also drove to my project to check on things with me and with the crew working. 4.) One of the best safety programs I have ever witnessed! I enjoy doing “flex and stretch“ with the crew every morning. Thank you! 5.) Hats off to all those volunteers the week after Christmas. Client in Wyoming on Landslides Which Damaged WYDOT Roads

In 2017, another well above normal snowpack winter and heavy spring rains resulted in 23 new landslides, which damaged or threatened WYDOT roads. WYDOT turned to GSI to help respond to these emergency situations. GSI was able to respond very quickly and in most cases had personnel on site to assess the site within 24 hours. They would provide a proposal for remediation with a preliminary design and estimated costs within 48 hours in most cases. During 2017, GSI was selected to perform remediation with contracts at six separate sites. In all cases, they were prepared to mobilize to the sites and begin work within a week of being given notice to proceed. A unique element of these emergency contracts was a partnership, between WYDOT and GSI, by which WYDOT provided some logistical support such as traffic control and providing water for drilling operations so that GSI could focus its efforts on performing the specialty work. This arrangement resulted in cost effective, efficient, successful projects. When responding to emergency landslide repair, time truly is money, the sooner a landslide can be remediated before it has a chance to grow, the less expensive it is to repair. In the past, WYDOT has experienced situations in which, landslides could possibly have been remediated quicker, experienced further failure during drawn out conventional design and contracting methods resulting in higher costs due to the additional failure. GSI uses various types of innovative geo-technology in their landslide remediation projects…. All of these projects were completed on schedule, even with cold weather conditions and snow storms …. All of the stabilization projects that GSI completed for WYDOT included a warranty to repair any of the remediation that would happen to fail, but to date none of the work that they have performed has required any repair. I would highly recommend GeoStabilization International to perform emergency landslide and slope remediation work. They have the resources, personnel, and expertise to respond to your emergency in a timely, professional manner.

As told by GSI Project Development Engineer: We have a SN wall job going on in central PA. Our client is a design build general contractor who is building a distribution center for the owner. I knew our job was finishing up soon, so I called the client on Friday to make sure he was happy. He said that both he and the owner are ‘extremely pleased’. A bit of back story on this one…karst site, and the line blasting for the cut wall was done poorly to boot. So, the excavated face was very difficult to work with to say the least. The client and owner were very skeptical that we could pull off a stable wall that looked ‘good’. Well, one day when Matt Crouch and his crew were working hard on the wall, the owner was out on site with our client looking at the wall area. The owner said to our client “geez looks like these guys aren’t fazed by anything”. Given the client and owner experiences, they are used to subcontractors complaining or making excuses. Well, Matt and the guys kept their head down, went to work hard, and got the job done. The client went on to tell me later that he would recommend us to anyone.

As told by GSI Project Development Engineer: A pipeline contractor dug a trench through the county road, down a steep bank, below a stream, and then up the next mountain to install the pipes. When they went to backfill the pipes in the roadway and embankment, the soil slipped and they couldn’t keep the backfill in place. We got a call to come out and look at the site. We gave them a proposal to build a GCS toe buttress at the stream bed, and then have the pipeline contractor construct a reinforced slope to rebuild the embankment. As the GCS was nearing the top, a WVDOH engineer stopped out to the site. The engineer was asking the pipeline contractor what the plan was, as he had general concern that the road would be repaired back to his satisfaction. As soon as the contractor mentioned GSI was working on the job, the county engineer said ‘OK, as long as GSI is on the job, I’m good here’.

This goes without saying for the folks behind the scene. This was my first job working with Perry, but appreciated his assistance when many people were looking at me for solutions. He provided this in an understandable form others could follow. I have worked with Zech before, and honestly took him for granted. I came to see him as “tough as nails,” the last time I worked with him, and he set the standard for me. I found age has not softened him up much, and was steadfast to the goal. At the same time, he would take a moment and keep me informed with what was occurring. I again appreciated him, and was saddened to hear when he was moving from our job. I did question Larry when he began, and for no other reason other than he was an unknown, but quickly realized he was talented in his work. Mr. Aguirre, I want to personally thank you for all the effort you and your crew on site at [the quarry] did for me. You were very accommodating. Special point needs to be given to GSI's safety program and its employees for following them strictly. I would honestly say that your organization is one of the top in safety that I have seen in every rope access industry. Please give a couple extra kudos to Fred and Courtney for putting up with me and observing me in order to keep me out of harm’s way. There is no doubt I slowed down their progress. I wish I could remember the whole crews name for they all deserve praise for the jobs that they do. After only two half days of peeling rock, my back is killing me from pushing that bar around. This is a really hard and dirty job (not to copy Rowe) and its workers deserve the utmost respect from the rope access community. I seriously believe you have one of the nastiest. He is extremely pleased with the way we are progressing, and very impressed with Matt and the crew’s professionalism and communication. I understand several Ministry reps were on site and given the red-carpet treatment and full briefing. They were pleased with the visit. Also, through all the years of work [he] had never experienced such a positive Workers Compensation Board safety inspection. In a thorough inspection that was nearly 2 hours in length, I understand the only comments the inspector could come up with were:

• the fire extinguisher on the rental fork lift was missing an inspection tag (fully functional, good shape unit, just missing a tag),
• the flagger didn’t have a reflective strip over the top of the hard hat (they have reflectors all the way around, but…. not over the top)

GeoStabilization Keeps Project on Track for Client in Virginia

As told by GSI Project Development Engineer: I was happy to take a call from [the Residency engineer] today and listened to him tell me how happy he was with the performance of Dylan and entire crew at the Garden Creek site. He had great things to say about the competence, work ethic, and professionalism of the whole team out there, and wanted to thank Dylan for the excellent communication as the project has unfolded. This is no small compliment, as this project began in a potentially negative atmosphere since the public thought we were behind schedule before we ever arrived! Nicely done, guys.

As told by GSI Rockfall Division Director: “I am at the [mine] now and the truck with the equipment from the warehouse just arrived. Environmental issues are extremely important in the mine so any equipment arriving on site has to be pressure washed and cleaned. Although they ask this of every contractor that arrives on site, they always seem to have to do a secondary washing here with their own people (just the way it always seems to turn out). Our people at the warehouse did such an awesome job of cleaning and taking the client’s concern to heart that they do not have to do a secondary cleaning and complimented us for such a great job.

Mine Management

On our weekly project update call at the mine, our meetings begin with a ‘safety share’. It’s usually filled with personal observations, mine traffic pattern changes to be conscientious of, or in this week’s meeting, a good catch by GSI’s Courtney Smith. There is a protocol to alert mine personnel working in the pit of any hazardous conditions, which includes highwall instabilities or severe weather approaching. Early hazard detection is critical at the mine as it is over 2.5 miles wide by almost a 1 mile deep. If warranted, the crews will need ample time to evacuate. With all the systems, risk controls and procedures in place to protect over 300 people working there, an onsite contractor (GSI) picked up on the lightning / weather quickly approaching and evacuated the slope. He then proceeded to advise mine dispatch of the situation, who in turn advised relevant mine crews (such as the drill & blast crew) that need to evacuate in the event of lightning. Courtney and crew should be commended on their proactive effort to let mine personnel know and not assume someone else was watching. The mine recognized this action and we should also take note of this courageous leadership to advise a mine with so many intimidating procedures in place to take action.

On the design side, I was truly impressed by how quickly and efficiently you and the other engineers responded to the need to revise the original design due to conflicts that arose with many of the proposed soil nails and the locations of the existing underground utilities. [We have] worked with GeoStabilization International (GSI) for over 10 years. GSI is our “go to contractor” for difficult slope stabilization projects. We have worked with GSI to stabilize steep slopes and remediate landslides on numerous projects along highways, pipelines and railroad right-of-ways. We have found them to be an excellent partner and one of very few contractors capable of working in areas with remote/difficult access. As part of the project, the pipeline had to be installed on a 35 [degree] slope approximately 900 feet in length… The GSI crew arrived on project ready to go to work. They installed the required stabilization in a very professional and timely matter and our client and I was very pleased with the results. I will not hesitate to employ GSI on future projects.

Emergency Repair of an Earth Retaining Wall for Client in New Mexico

I had the opportunity to work with GSI on an emergency repair of an earth retaining wall on Highway NM 475 at MM 11. This project was an emergency repair because the earth retaining wall is part of the roadway embankment, which was failing. Also, NM 475 is the only highway used to get to Ski Santa Fe. The NMDOT requested that GSI have repairs to the wall made before the kickoff to ski season. As I remember, there was not much advanced notice to proceed given. GSI was able to work in inclement weather, traveling hazardous roadways to get to the job site. The crew was good, they concentrated on production. They understood that this project needed to be expedited. The crew worked like a well-oiled machine. Apparently, some of the crew worked together on a previous project for six weeks. It showed because, for example, if one guy needed a pipe wrench, another guy already had it ready for him. Like I said above, the crew worked on production, they hustled, and did it all in a very safe manner. At the end, the wall had been completely repaired two days after the opening of Ski Santa Fe, which was good for all. I would highly recommend GSI on any future NMDOT projects.
