Slope Repair Using a Soil Nail Wall, Rock Anchor, and Mesh

The slope above a major traffic artery in Multnomah County, Oregon, began to erode with the material falling into the travel lanes below. Over time, the resulting scarp continued to regress back into private property by approximately 5 feet. GeoStabilization International®, leading soil nail wall contractors providing engineered soil repairs throughout the United States and Canada, was called to provide emergency design-build services for a permanent solution.

The sloping cut consisted of fractured rock on the bottom 2/3rd, with the top third having an upper mantle of overburdened soil. As the broken rock detached from the slope, the mantle’s material became undermined and fell to the highway below. Our engineers’ design entailed using soil nailing to construct a soil nail wall to encapsulate the upper soil layer for slope stabilization. For the rock slope portion, rock anchors were drilled into the slope, and a high-strength mesh secured to the anchors was chosen to provide rockfall mitigation.

Soil Nail Wall Construction

To build the soil nail wall, an excavator-mounted drill working from the roadway above the slope drilled soil nails horizontally into its mantle portion. Forms were used to offset the wall’s face from the existing pitch, and the resulting area was backfilled with controlled low-strength material to regain the lost property. Drainboards were set on the front face and channeled to three collection points before reinforcing steel was attached to the soil anchors, and then shotcrete was applied.

Rock Anchor Installation

The rockfall remediation installation began with sixty rock anchors drilled across the slope’s surface. Using the innovative excavator-mounted drill, all soil nails and rock anchors were installed from the slope’s bottom and top without needing intermediate benches. Then, 2,200 SF of high-strength galvanized mesh was laid on the fractured rock face before being secured with bearing plates. Then piping was connected to the three collection points mentioned above to drain those areas properly.
