The GeoStabilization team traveled to the very scenic Uinta Wasatch Cache National Forest in Utah to install a shotcrete face on a retaining road wall.
Farmington Canyon Road cuts through the beautiful Uinta Wasatch Cache National Forest. Heavy rainfall had caused a major slide in the area, dumping several hundred cubic yards of gravel and boulders on the road, and greatly surcharging the surrounding timber crib retaining walls.
The Forest Service called the team at GeoStabilization to clean up the debris, repair the slope, and stabilize the retaining walls, which already needed replacement prior to the slide.
Due to the debris and the nature of the terrain, access to the site was limited, and the slope excavator teams would have to work from the top of the retaining walls.
To ensure high-quality execution in this challenging setting, the Forest Service issued a request for proposal to confirm that the future contractors would be qualified for the specialty work.
The proposal came out on top in the combined technical and price categories, so the Forest Service awarded the contract to GeoStabilization.
GeoStabilization International® delivers turn-key solutions for retaining wall repairs and rehabilitation. Thanks to the industry-leading specialty tools and equipment, GeoStabilization can often repair and reinforce walls on-site without:
This results in significant cost and time savings, as was the case with this project.
To improve soil retention, stabilize the slope, and prevent further slope failure, hollow bar soil nails through the timber crib walls were launched and anchored them into the underlying bedrock.
A new reinforced shotcrete face over the timber façade was proposed to stabilize the retaining walls.
To that end, a Shotcrete Robot was deployed, one of the best soil stabilization innovations in recent years. This machine allows for the application of shotcrete with equipment rather than by holding a hose manually, which greatly increases safety, quality, and production rates.
The robot also comes with a wireless remote that allows for precise control at the top of the retention walls and gives better visibility of the shotcrete face during application.
