In the summer of 2019, a large rockslide was discovered along a mountainside next to Interstate 81 in Virginia, affecting its southbound lanes at MM 126.7. When the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Salem District’s personnel investigated, they realized the issue was more than a periodic nuisance as they found the presence of a large magnitude rockslide complex with signs of an imminent trigger.
