I-75 Rockfall Mitigation

The Tennessee Department of Transportation contracted GeoStabilization International® to assist with a major rockfall event along Interstate 75 (I-75). Large boulders had collapsed onto the roadway, partially closing traffic, and causing up to 30-minute delays.

GeoStabilization’s flexibility, emergency response capability, and industry-leading rockfall control solutions were critical to reopening I-75.

The company’s rockfall mitigation team worked together with the client and their contractor to devise a plan to stop the active rock movement quickly, remove the boulders blocking the roadway, and restore the roadway passage. Once the action plan was ready, GeoStabilization mobilized its highly trained Rockfall Remediation Technicians (RRTs) to begin the work.

Rockfall Control Systems

GeoStabilization’s crews mitigate rockfall hazards using on-slope solutions such as attenuator systems and draped mesh that allow the rockfall to occur but control its movement.

The standard solution involves draping high-tensile-strength steel mesh over the slope to keep rocks under the mesh as they tumble down the hill. This prevents boulders from falling onto the roadway and other critical infrastructure.

If the site has very steep or high slopes, it may require additional protection. In such cases, GeoStabilization’s Rockfall Remediation Technicians extend drape mesh from a rock barrier to create a hybrid barrier or attenuator system. A rock anchor system typically helps keep the mesh in place.

No site, no matter how challenging, is a match for GeoStabilization. Thanks to the company’s specialized fleet of purpose-built, limited-access rock drills, the crews can quickly install rockfall mitigation solutions even in the most remote or inaccessible areas.

Rock Scaling

Rock scaling lies at the heart of GeoStabilization’s rockfall mitigation services. The vast majority of rockfall mediation projects require some form of scaling.

The company’s RRTs are certified and some of the most highly trained rock scaling experts in the industry. GeoStabilization’s Rope Access Program has also earned the Association of Geohazard Professionals’ Safety Recognition as a best-in-class safety program annually since 2018.

GeoStabilization’s scaling services include:

  • Manual scaling, including airbag, scaling bar, and hydraulic jack
  • Mechanical scaling
  • Remote scaling with blasting capabilities, including the innovative AutoStem technology, the world’s safest and most advanced blasting technology
