Thanks to its highly skilled engineers and large fleet of advanced limited-access equipment, the company is able to deliver industry-leading emergency solutions with unrivaled success rate and safety record.

Tramway Tower Foundation Support in Limited-Access Terrain

An industrial tramway manufacturer contracted GeoStabilization International® to construct the underpinning foundation for two tramway towers in a remote mountain area.

The rugged limited access terrain made it impossible for traditional equipment to reach the site. Conventional tower and transmission line foundations were likewise ill-suited for the project, mainly due to the lack of water and concrete batch plants as well as unknown subsurface conditions.

Launched SuperMicropiles™ for Superior Bearing Support

Since conventional methods were not feasible, GeoStabilization used helicopters to bring its proprietary Launched SuperMicropiles™ and a fleet of limited-access drill rigs to the site.

GeoStabilization’s SuperMicropiles™ are the next step in the evolution of micropile technology. Micropiles are grouted pile foundations that typically measure less than 12 inches in diameter. They normally feature a casing and/or a center bar for reinforcement. To construct a micropile, GeoStabilization’s technicians first drill a borehole and insert the steel before adding pressure grouting with neat-cement grout.

The SuperMicropiles™ are specifically designed to reach depths of 160 feet and withstand axial and lateral loads and ground movement. As a result, these systems provide exceptional bearing support to retaining walls and other structures.

Launched SuperMicropiles™ installation is also much faster and more economical than that of conventional alternatives. GeoStabilization’s technicians can often install SuperMicropiles™ in challenging environments with minimal site disturbance and more quickly than conventional foundations in standard-access sites.

Applications of Micropiles and Ground Anchors

Thanks to its specialized limited-access equipment, GeoStabilization International® can install micropile foundations and ground anchor systems in any location, soil type, and subsurface conditions.

Possible use cases include:

  • Towers
  • Turbines
  • Transmission lines
  • Control house facilities
  • Commercial and residential buildings

Micropiles can serve as a substitute for conventional piles or as part of a composite soil/pile mass. The installation causes minimal noise and vibration, making micropiles especially well-suited for low-headroom conditions and existing basement facilities. High-performance ground anchors can also repair existing cantilevers and reinforced retaining walls with signs of distress.
