Rock Slope Stabilization Using Polyurethane Resin

Polyurethane resin (PUR) has traditionally had various applications in the mining industry. Thanks to recent technological advances, PUR has now become a staple in the geohazard mitigation sector as well.

GeoStabilization’s technicians use PUR on its own to solidify rock masses or together with rock bolts or dowels to reduce the number of anchors required and, by extension, the overall project costs. Another benefit of PUR is that it is invisible after installation. That makes it an excellent choice for locations where design and appearance matter and where more conspicuous solutions like mesh, rock anchors, or shotcrete might not be appropriate.

Drawing on the successful implementations of PUR in Colorado and other western states, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (DOT) decided to examine the potential application of polyurethane resin in multiple test sites across the state.

GeoStabilization’s Rockfall Remediation Technicians (RRTs), working closely with the resin manufacturer, designed and drilled up to 20-feet-deep holes in the rock mass. The crews then carefully injected high-strength, two-component PUR in stages using packers. GeoStabilization’s engineers personally monitored the injection process, including the migration of the PUR and where it exited the rock face.

After multiple freeze/thaw cycles, GeoStabilization’s engineers and the DOT found that the resin had effectively glued the unstable rock masses in place and all sites were fully intact with no further rockfall issues.

With over 5,500 geohazard mitigation projects successfully completed to date, GeoStabilization is a best-in-class provider of solutions for all rockfall mitigation and rock slope stabilization needs.

GeoStabilization’s Rock Slope Stabilization Methods

From draped steel mesh systems to remote scaling, the company uses a wide range of both time-tested and innovative slope stabilization techniques.

Rockfall Control

GeoStabilization International® mitigates rockfall hazards using on-slope treatments that stabilize compromised slopes and contain rock mass movement. Examples include shotcrete retaining walls, anchor rock structures, and steel mesh draped from the top of the slope experiencing rockfall issues.

Rock Scaling

GeoStabilization’s certified and highly trained Rockfall Remediation Technicians (RRTs) perform manual, mechanical, and remote scaling with blasting capabilities depending on the needs of the project.

Rock Slope Stabilization Experts

GeoStabilization International® is a leading rock slope stabilization and geohazard mitigation company. GeoStabilization maintains 24-hour emergency response capability and works with residential, commercial, and institutional clients in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
