Roadway Launched SuperMicropile™ Repair

A precariously perched two-lane roadway in Colorado National Monument needed to be widened. The Central Federal Lands office of the Federal Highway Administration designed a mechanically stabilized earth retaining wall to facilitate that widening. In order to work quickly, maintain a small footprint, and work within a limited excavation, the FHWA selected Launched SuperMicropiles™ as the solution for building the foundation of the wall. GeoStabilization International® installed the Launched SuperMicropiles™ and met the FHWA goal of a fast solution that would minimize the size of the excavation and provide a permanent foundation support system. Moreover, Launched SuperMicropiles™ also proved to be an economical solution.

Foundation Underpinning Services

GeoStabilization International® offers expert construction services to protect roads, bridges, and other structures from soil erosion, landslides, sinkholes, and rockfalls. Our ever-growing staff consists of every expert you’ll need, from equipment operators to geotechnical engineers.

We have the experience to handle a wide range of projects across industries using the best technologies available. We’ve completed underpinning foundation projects, soil repairs, bridge abutments, and many other projects in the transportation, mining, communication, pipeline, power, and railway markets. Our experts understand how to stabilize any existing structure through various construction methods and technologies.

GeoStabilization International® provides geohazard mitigation and stabilization services throughout the United States, Canada, and Australasia.

Underpinning Micropiles

Micropiles provide an alternative to underpinning foundations using push piers or conventional piles. Foundation repair contractors install micropiles to support existing foundations when they don’t reach the depth of planned construction. This piled method reinforces foundations in less-than-ideal ground conditions and for projects where nearby structures restrict access.

For example, GeoStabilization International® used Self-Drilling SuperMicropiles™ on an excavation shoring project for a new home’s foundation. The new construction required micropiles because the footings of the two surrounding buildings sat above the planned construction depth.

Soil Nail Walls

Landslide mitigation sometimes requires the installation of a soil nail wall in addition to Micropile underpinning. Foundations for roadways, for example, must include stable soil to prevent landslides and other geohazards. Our teams use various soil nail technologies to stabilize soil, including SuperNail® and Geosynthetically Confined Soil® (GCS®) technology.

We used soil nails and shotcrete to create a retaining wall when a landslide caused the closure of one lane of a road in Kentucky. Our slope retention experts completed the emergency repairs in just over a week.

Benefits of Underpinning Wall Foundations Using Micropiles

Micropile technology allows GeoStabilization International® to handle projects regardless of ground condition and soil type. Benefits of this industry-leading technology include:

  • Easier underpinning installation in low-headroom and access-restrictive conditions
  • Easier installation in any area accessible via helicopter
  • Fast installation for quick emergency repairs, excavations, etc.

Micropile anchor and support systems provide structural stability in various applications, including transmission towers, wind turbines, commercial buildings, residential structures, and more.
