A precariously perched two-lane roadway in Colorado National Monument needed to be widened. The Central Federal Lands office of the Federal Highway Administration designed a mechanically stabilized earth retaining wall to facilitate that widening. In order to work quickly, maintain a small footprint, and work within a limited excavation, the FHWA selected Launched SuperMicropiles™ as the solution for building the foundation of the wall. Micropiles provide an alternative to underpinning foundations using push piers or conventional piles. Foundation repair contractors install micropiles to support existing foundations when they don’t reach the depth of planned construction.
