Gabion Retaining Wall and Roadway Stabilization

In 2011, GeoStabilization International® received an emergency call from a national railway operator to repair a highly fractured rock substrate 100 feet above a railway switching yard. The failing slope jeopardized 80 linear feet of roadway.

The affected area was supported by wire mesh gabion baskets. GeoStabilization’s engineers performed an initial site investigation and took measurements and photographs using rope access techniques. After carrying out global stability modeling and consulting with Dr. Skip Watts from Radford University and Dr. Brendan Fisher from Fisher & Strickler Rock Engineering, GeoStabilization produced a price proposal and a conceptual design approach involving soil nails.

The crews started working as soon as they received the go-ahead from the client. While GeoStabilization provided road traffic control and the railway operator handled train traffic, the crews installed multiple rows of grouted self-drilling SuperNails® through the entire length of the gabions. GeoStabilization completed the project successfully in just two weeks and within budget.

Retaining Wall Repair for Roadway Stabilization

With its industry-leading Design/Build/Warranty solution with a 75-year design life, GeoStabilization International® is a global leader in retaining wall repair and rehabilitation.

Repair and Rehabilitation Solutions for Retaining Walls

GeoStabilization’s innovative equipment and large fleet of limited-access vehicles allow its crews to fix even the most remote walls in place with minimal environmental impact.

Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Walls

MSE walls fail due to poor drainage or compaction coupled with the use of widely spaced reinforcement and subpar soils. GeoStabilization’s crews can work around existing MSE structures to fix them in place. In-place wall foundation repair costs 30% less than total replacement and takes weeks to complete, not months.

Gabion, Steel Pile, and Historic Rock Walls

Gabion retaining wall structures often have inadequate base-to-height ratios, and many steel pile walls are prone to landslides due to poor design. Most historical rock walls are also well past their functional life. When these structures fail, GeoStabilization can carry out retaining wall repair in place quickly and efficiently without the need for significant excavation or total replacement.

Once the repair is over, GeoStabilization’s skilled crews can create historic rock stacking patterns as needed. The company’s highly trained design engineers and operators have extensive experience working with historical societies and can restore the original appearance of even the most damaged patterns.
