Henry County, Ohio, experienced multiple landslides and soil retention issues along a county road causing significant slippage into the Maumee River. Once its shoulder became compromised to the pavement edge, the entire roadway was in danger of failure during heavy rain events. Typically, a road in this rural area could be relocated. However, an adjacent cemetery meant that option was not feasible. The county knew slope stabilization measures were required to ensure the travel artery remained unaffected.
GeoStabilization International®, leading soil nail wall contractors providing engineered soil repairs throughout the United States and Canada, met with county personnel hours after the county called about the problem. While the county had self-performed a repair to a more minor roadway section years before with a soldier pile wall, that option was now prohibitively expensive. Our engineers presented a soil nail wall solution that would maintain traffic in one lane throughout the repair, could be completed in a fraction of the time and cost of the “traditional” options, and would keep the roadway’s alignment along the cemetery.
Our design called for stabilizing the slope below the road by installing soil nails using our Soil Nail Launcher™, one of GeoStabilization’s soil stabilization innovations. Since this device dynamically shoots the soil anchors into the ground without grouting, the launched SuperNails™ were installed much faster than traditional drilling methods. All the work was completed from the roadway platform above the slope to avoid any permitting necessary to work in the riverbed below the road. The design had the additional benefit of giving the county the option to move the road away from the river beyond this constraint. Once the soil anchors were installed, a steel-reinforcing element was connected to them. Then shotcrete was sprayed to the slope’s surface and encapsulated the reinforcing element as a slope facing.
