A midstream transmission group asked GeoStabilization International®, a landslide stabilization expert, to design and construct engineered slope repairs for a series of shallow landslides that had developed on a pipeline section traversing a steep, remote mountainside. Traditional repair techniques were not feasible due to the site’s difficult access and the surrounding environmentally sensitive wetlands, flood plain, and river below. GeoStabilization’s engineering group designed a repair using SuperNails® combined with high-strength wire mesh for slope stabilization and soil retention.
When GeoStabilization’s crews began installing the soil anchors, they had to utilize limited access drill rigs and be tethered from ropes and climbing harnesses when installing the soil nails to ensure their safety due to the severity of the slopes’ grade. Working in sections, once the SuperNails® were drilled into the slope, more than 14,000 square feet of high-tensile wire mesh was placed on the slope and then secured with bearing plates and nuts. This wire mesh, tightened securely to the slope, acts to engage the soil if it begins to move in the future. All work was performed without significant site disturbance or impact on pipeline operations. Despite adverse weather conditions throughout the repair, the services were completed on budget and at a fraction of the cost of other more traditional repair methods.
