Landslide Mitigation Utilizing Soil Nails

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) was plagued with nine shallow and deeper-seated landslides at six sites throughout the eastern two-thirds of the state. To repair the sites quickly, effectively, and at the least cost, MDT put out a design/build solicitation for landslide mitigation at all the sites.

GeoStabilization International®, a slope stabilization expert, teamed with Great West Engineering out of Helena, Montana, for the engineered slope repair project. The team scored highest on both the Statement of Qualifications and the technical score and, most importantly, came in 2.8 million dollars under the next responsive bidder. After the project’s award, GeoStabilization allocated up to 5 crews working concurrently to ensure the project was completed on time. Our equipment experts designed and built unique grout plants that could keep working in the sub-zero temperatures of Montana’s “spring.” MDT, impressed with the work as it progressed, added a seventh site to the list during construction.

Limited Access Drilling and Slope Excavator

When GeoStabilization’s crews installed the SuperNails®, they had to utilize limited access drill rigs and special procedures to ensure their safety due to the severity of the slopes’ grade. Working in sections, once the 1,800-each soil nails were drilled into the slope, more than 32,000 square feet of galvanized high-strength mesh and 21,000 square feet of shotcrete were used for slope facing and soil retention. Once the wire mesh was placed on the slope, it was secured with bearing plates and nuts to the soil anchors. When the shotcrete facing was used, a steel-reinforcing element was connected to the soil nails. The shotcrete was sprayed to the slope’s surface and encapsulated as the reinforcing element.

Benefits of SuperNails® Over Conventional Solid Bar Soil Nails

  • SuperNails® can be installed in collapsing holes, areas with voids, and actively moving landslides
  • The soil anchors can be drilled to depths of up to 80 feet in soil, rock, or a combination of soil and rock
  • Depending on the design services specified, anywhere from 1-4 corrosion protection layers will protect the tensile element for permanent application when soil nailing

GeoStabilization finished all seven sites before the original six-site deadline. As usual, no contractor-initiated change orders were made, with the only change in scope being that requested by MDT. Each of these projects is supported by GeoStabilization’s industry-leading multi-year performance warranty.
