GCS® Retaining Wall Repair – Crusher Wall

A prominent quarry customer chose GeoStabilization International® to rehabilitate a crusher wall that their engineers had found inadequate. Our crews constructed a 93-m long by 13-m high Geosynthetically Confined Soil® (GCS®) wall to protect the crusher adjoining from rockfall. Despite the challenging site conditions, our skilled personnel completed the project on a tight schedule.

Geosynthetically Confined Soil® (GCS®) Retaining Walls

GCS® walls have the same components as a Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) wall:

  • Soil reinforcement materials
  • Wall facing
  • Earth backfill

Both walls consist of compacted backfill in layers. The MSE wall mechanically fixes the backfill to the walls’ facing blocks using grids as tie-back elements so that the soil reinforcement materials support the load. On the other hand, GCS® walls use closely spaced (8-12 inches) reinforcement material that provides uniform soil confinement throughout each layer, independent of the facing. The GCS® wall’s facing block does not bear the load.

GeoStabilization’s standard solution for GCS® walls is an 8-inch spacing between woven geosynthetics reinforcements with tensile capacities of up to 400 pounds per foot. GCS® walls require compacted backfill to perform properly since loading itself does not cause the backfill to self-compact, and uncompacted backfill will cause wall failure.
