Engineered Soil Repairs in Kentucky

Around 7:30 am, GeoStabilization International®, a geohazard mitigation expert performing engineered soil repairs and landslide remediation, received a phone call that a major traffic road between Harlan and Pineville, Kentucky, had slipped down the hillside, creating a significant drop in the pavement. This landslide closed one whole lane and a portion of an adjoining road. Our personnel were the first to arrive at the site and found no traffic control, and vehicles had no advance warning of oncoming traffic. GeoStabilization immediately began providing traffic control until KYTC’s personnel arrived and took over.

After consulting with Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s (KYTC) engineers, GeoStabilization quickly developed an engineered soil repair proposal for stabilizing the slope below the road. The proposal was approved, and work started the same day. The design consisted of constructing a soil nail wall using soil nails and shotcrete facing to provide slope stabilization and soil retention.

Before GeoStabilization began its work, KYTC’s crews filled the inboard ditch with millings, which allowed vehicles to navigate safely with one lane open in each direction to keep traffic flowing a minimal amount. Working from the roadway above, the crews began drilling approximately soil anchors horizontally into the slope. A steel-reinforcing element was then secured to the soil nails before shotcrete was applied to the face and encapsulated the reinforcing element. The emergency work was completed within ten days, and traffic started flowing as usual once the road was reopened.
