Enhance Your Ohio Project

Structural shotcrete walls are essential for stability and reinforcement across Ohio's I-77 highway retaining walls—but they don't have to remain purely functional. GSI's sculpted shotcrete finishes provide an opportunity to enhance the visual appeal of your project while maintaining full structural integrity.

Our network of experienced sculpting artisans specializes in creating hand-sculpted textures, transforming shotcrete walls into stunning natural rock formations, masonry-style facades, or custom-designed patterns. Using advanced sculpting techniques and expert craftsmanship, we ensure each Ohio project seamlessly integrates with its surrounding environment—matching Hocking Hills Black Hand sandstone and Ohio sandstone ledges and delivering both functionality and artistic excellence.

Sculpted Shotcrete Finish Options for Ohio

Rough Gun Shotcrete Finish

GSI's standard structural shotcrete wall features a natural light gray concrete with a rough-gun finish, showcasing minor irregularities and waves that conform to the retained cut slope surface. For Ohio projects requiring enhanced aesthetics, custom finish upgrades are available.

Stain Only

Add color for a natural, blended appearance. Choose from a variety of earth-tone shades to complement Ohio's surrounding environment—matching the natural tones of Hocking Hills Black Hand sandstone and Ohio sandstone ledges. Stain-only application enhances the rough-gun texture without additional sculpting, offering a cost-effective aesthetic upgrade for Ohio highway corridors and infrastructure walls.

Simple Geologic Finish

A subtle rock-like sculpted shotcrete finish to enhance natural appearance in high-visibility areas across Ohio. The simple geologic finish uses up to 3 colors with low-relief, subtle formations—ideal for highway retaining walls and infrastructure projects where natural blending matters but dramatic detail is not required.

Detailed Geologic Finish

The most realistic rock-like sculpted shotcrete finish, designed to seamlessly blend into Ohio's surrounding Hocking Hills Black Hand sandstone and Ohio sandstone ledges formations. Detailed geologic finishes use 3+ colors to achieve a textured, realistic look with high-relief detail and outcroppings that replicate the specific geologic character of the project site.

Stone Mason/Ashlar Finish

Achieve the look of cut stone or ashlar masonry using custom stamping or hand-carving techniques, with the option to enhance the finish further with dye or stain—perfect for Ohio projects requiring a classic or rustic aesthetic. Available styles include:

  • Stamped Stone Matrix — Stacked rock pattern, stamped with 1–2 stain colors for a clean, uniform look
  • Stamped Ashlar — Stamped ashlar pattern, 1–2 colors, ideal for faster production timelines
  • Hand-Carved Stone — Labor-intensive with deep texture and detailed staining for a realistic finish
  • Hand-Carved Ashlar — Hand-carved joints and 2+ stain colors for a richly crafted, authentic appearance

Ohio Project Applications

Sculpted shotcrete finishes serve Ohio projects across multiple sectors: I-77 highway retaining walls, Hocking Hills scenic corridor structures, Columbus and Cleveland commercial development. Every sculpted finish is applied over GSI's structural shotcrete wall system—providing the engineering performance the site requires with the aesthetic quality the project demands.

Sculpted Shotcrete Process in Ohio

From finish selection through sealed completion, GSI delivers sculpted shotcrete walls for Ohio projects in five coordinated steps.

Step 1

Finish Selection & Design

GSI works with your team to select the sculpted shotcrete finish that best matches Ohio's local geology, architectural character, or project design requirements.

Step 2

Structural Wall Installation

GSI engineers install the structural soil nail wall, retaining structure, or slope facing system—the engineered foundation that the sculpted finish will cover.

Step 3

Sculpting Layer & Artisan Work

A sculpting layer of shotcrete is applied over the structural face. Experienced artisans hand-sculpt textures, formations, or patterns while the material is workable.

Step 4

Staining & Color Application

Multi-color stain application matched to local rock tones or specified architectural colors, building natural depth and variation across the wall face.

Protective Sealing

UV-resistant protective sealer applied over completed staining. Finish engineered to withstand the full range of weather and exposure conditions in the project area.

Why Choose Sculpted Shotcrete?

  • Aesthetic Integration. Sculpted shotcrete finishes blend with Ohio's surrounding geology or architectural style—transforming functional retaining walls into features that enhance the project environment rather than detracting from it.
  • Durability & Longevity. Unlike traditional masonry, shotcrete is monolithic, reducing points of failure over time. The structural wall and aesthetic finish are one continuous system—no mortar joints to deteriorate, no veneer panels to separate.
  • Customizable Designs. Choose from geologic, stone mason, ashlar, stain-only, or custom-designed textures and colors to achieve the look your Ohio project requires. Every finish can be tailored to match specific local formations or architectural standards.
  • Cost-Effective Enhancement. Sculpted shotcrete delivers aesthetic results at a fraction of the cost compared to traditional stone or masonry wall construction—with faster installation timelines and lower long-term maintenance.

Retaining Wall Repair for Commercial Property in Ohio

I wanted to let you know how impressed we were with your company. Time will tell how well it all worked, however, the professionalism and quality of your team was most obvious. I truly believe we could not have picked a better company for this large endeavor. I was there yesterday showing it to our owner, and was quite proud of the work you did. Everything you promised, you delivered. And though there were a couple snafus, based on a job this large, it was beyond minor and also you made it all right in the end. Thank you for that. In speaking with Tammie, our Property Manager and Dave--the quality of your guys working was top notch.

Again, ask me years from now how it is working, but if ever we had another job with your name on it, it would be a pleasure and honor to work with you again!

Slope Stabilization for Homeowner in Ohio

My wife and I live in Ohio and we are residential clients of GSI. Your team has been securing our lakefront cliff face over the past two weeks. I am writing you today to commend you on your outstanding team members.

We had three rows of soil nails installed across about a 170' cliff edge overlooking Lake Erie. These were connected with a steel mesh, and the shotcrete facing is being finished as I write. We have been nothing but pleased with the results. In general, I can tell you that your crew has been dependable, respectful, friendly, polite, and quiet (at least as quiet as they can be). They have been flexible in their plans, and they have worked extremely hard. They even clean up after themselves after work each day. I have to say that I wasn't sure what to expect, but we have been pleasantly surprised.

The project manager, Jared McDowell, has really kept the project moving -- they will finish almost a week early. There have been some roadblocks along the way - like locating a private underground natural gas pipeline in the yard and dealing with trouble getting machinery due to hurricanes - but Jared found a way to keep things going in the right direction. He was personable, and he listened to our concerns and answered our questions. I also appreciate the fact the he never gave the impression that he was too busy to talk to us. The other primary crew members Dylan Battaglia, Michal Kopij, Aaron Cordova are tremendous workers and nice guys. We would gladly work with them again if the need ever arose.

I would also like to make a special note about our project development engineer, Greg Bachman. Thank goodness for him. We live at the end of a cul-de-sac, and we needed written permission from our neighbor to cross part of his lawn. Let's just say that our neighbor is a challenging person, and leave it at that. Greg spent several weeks meeting with different local engineering firms because our neighbor trusted their opinions and would not sign until the local firms saw our plans. I think most other compaines would have bailed at that point, but Greg stuck with us. Greg then had a face to face meeting with our neighbor and even agreed to have the GSI legal team simplify the contract language for Al's benefit. He also managed all the dealings with the city for permitting and the SWPPP plans. We are so grateful to have the GSI solution implemented as it was really the only cost-effective option available to us -- other than letting our property fall into Lake Erie. Greg went WAY above and beyond, and we can't thank him enough. I told Greg that if he ever needs a reference, we are here for him.

This has been a really long endeavor, and we are so pleased to have the solution in place. It is a great feeling to know that our family and friends will be able to enjoy the view and feel completely safe. Thank you for your solution and congratulations on fielding a great team. Best of luck to you in the future.
