Landslide Repair Across Massachusetts

Massachusetts shares New England's glacial till and fractured bedrock slope conditions, and along I-90 through the Berkshires and I-93's rock cuts, decades of freeze-thaw cycling combined with de-icing salt infiltration have progressively weakened till slopes in ways MassDOT's winter maintenance program inadvertently accelerates even as it keeps the roadway itself safe.

This pattern is consistent with the broader Steep Slope Stability Issues challenges GSI addresses across the state.

How GSI Delivers Landslide Repair in Massachusetts

Soil Nail Wall Reinforcement

GSI anchors Massachusetts soil nail walls past the salt-affected surface till zone into deeper, chemically unaffected material — addressing a degradation pathway unique to heavily salted winter corridors. GSI's soil nailing capability supports this step.

Deep Drainage Systems

Snowmelt carrying dissolved de-icing salt infiltrates Massachusetts till slopes seasonally — horizontal drains routed to intercept this specific infiltration reduce both the moisture and the chemical loading driving slope weakening. This is one application of GSI's broader Soil Nail Launcher™ expertise.

Launcher Technology for Difficult Soils

Salt-affected till that has lost cohesion is prone to borehole collapse during conventional drilling — the Soil Nail Launcher™ installs without depending on till strength that winter maintenance chemistry has already degraded. GSI's horizontal drains experience informs this approach.

This approach is informed by GSI's broader landslide emergency response work across Massachusetts.

Massachusetts Landslide Repair Process

GSI follows a systematic five-step process to deliver landslide repair solutions in MassDOT corridors and beyond.

Step 1

Site Assessment

GSI engineers evaluate conditions and severity at your Massachusetts site.

Step 2

Root Cause Investigation

In-house geologists investigate the specific conditions driving the issue, referencing Massachusetts's Berkshire schist and gneiss with glacially deposited coastal soils.

Step 3

Engineered Solution Design

Custom design matched to Massachusetts's site-specific geology, hydrology, and infrastructure loading.

Step 4

Design/Build Execution

One team executes the engineered solution under a single MassDOT-ready contract.

Warranty

Design/build/warranty coverage on every landslide repair solution installed in Massachusetts.

Why Massachusetts Trusts GSI for Landslide Repair

Engineered for Massachusetts's conditions. GSI addresses the de-icing salt infiltration pathway specific to Massachusetts's heavily salted winter corridors — a slope degradation mechanism standard repair specifications don't isolate. It's backed by GSI's broader general contractors and asset owners capability.

Design/build delivery. One contract covers design and construction — removing the handoff delays between design and field work.

MassDOT specification compliance. Design and construction records satisfy applicable DOT specifications from first submittal.

Client Reviews

Landslide Repair for Infrastructure in California

“I would like to thank you and the county for repairing the road slide on Dunne avenue. The repair is excellent and the contractors were very efficient and skilled. You personally did a great job of providing information about the status of the project. My family appreciates your efforts.”

Landslide Repair for Homeowner in Colorado

I would like this to be a letter of appreciation and gratitude on a job well done. Our house was first threatened by a landslide back in June, 2017 and it has been a journey that has been both stressful and scary. And yet, every cloud has a silver lining and in this case the support, encouragement and character of everyone we met from GSI has indeed been a gift throughout this journey.

GSI was recommended by Steve Pawlak and we met Nathan Thompson early on. Nathan is a person who inspires trust and our first impression was verified throughout the process that led to a retaining system that has saved our house. As with everyone, and I mean everyone we met, we felt we had a group of people who were on our side.

There were challenges that were overcome; the patience needed along with several visits to get the project underway, a renegotiated plan and bid when the insurance settlement squeezed the payment amount, and a time crunch that led to a change in plans where the panels were poured on the hillside, that allowed for the project to be started as quickly as possible.

The crew that showed up to do the work was respectful, always ready to explain what was happening and was also timely, hard working and ready to go the extra mile. A great group of people with positive attitudes who seemed to genuinely work well together.

Watching Spike work on that excavator was awe inspiring. One of my favorite moments was filming him on my phone to show my office secretaries at the Elementary School. I recorded a "holy shit" without knowing it when he pulled off an amazing stunt coming off a ledge and then being horrified when that came out while I was sharing the video at school. I was able to laugh later.

Thank you again and if I can ever serve as a reference, please let me know.

Slope Stabilization and Landslide Repair in Pennsylvania

[We have] worked with GeoStabilization International (GSI) for over 10 years. GSI is our “go to contractor” for difficult slope stabilization projects. We have worked with GSI to stabilize steep slopes and remediate landslides on numerous projects along highways, pipelines and railroad right-of-ways. We have found them to be an excellent partner and one of very few contractors capable of working in areas with remote/difficult access. Their experienced equipment operators are able to work efficiently under difficult and often hazardous conditions, and yet maintain the project schedule… [We have] recommended GSI to clients and subcontracted them sole source on … design-build projects. I have no reservations recommending GSI for geohazard mitigation type work on pipeline right-of-way or other projects requiring slope stabilization.
