Architectural Shotcrete Solutions

Tennessee's I-40, I-75, I-24, US-441 Smokies, I-26 require engineered retaining walls for slope stabilization, road widening, and grade separation. Standard rough-gun shotcrete provides the structural performance—but leaves a gray concrete surface that clashes with Tennessee's Cades Cove fieldstone and surrounding landscape. In scenic corridors, historic districts, and commercially visible locations, that visual impact creates problems with permitting agencies, community stakeholders, and property values.

TDOT and Tennessee's commercial developers increasingly require retaining walls that deliver full structural performance while matching the character of the surrounding environment. Architectural shotcrete solves this—transforming structural walls into realistic rock formations, cut stone facades, or custom-textured surfaces at a fraction of the cost of traditional masonry construction.

Architectural Shotcrete Finish Options for Tennessee

Geologic Finishes — Simple and Detailed

Geologic finishes are the most popular architectural shotcrete option, transforming structural walls into realistic rock formations matching Tennessee's native Cades Cove fieldstone, Cumberland Plateau sandstone, Tennessee marble. Simple geologic finishes use up to 3 colors with low-relief formations. Detailed geologic finishes use 3+ colors with high-relief outcroppings replicating specific local formations.

  • Hand-sculpted textures replicating Cades Cove fieldstone formations
  • Multi-color staining systems matching local rock tones
  • Low-relief (simple) or high-relief (detailed) options based on visibility and budget
  • Custom molds created from actual local rock samples for maximum realism

Stone Mason and Ashlar Finishes

For historic districts, commercial developments, and urban infrastructure, stamped or hand-carved stone mason and ashlar finishes deliver traditional masonry appearance at a fraction of the cost and timeline.

  • Stamped stone matrix — stacked rock pattern with 1–2 stain colors
  • Stamped ashlar — ashlar block pattern ideal for faster production
  • Hand-carved stone — deep texture and detailed staining for maximum realism
  • Hand-carved ashlar — carved joints with 2+ stain colors for authentic character

Stain-Only and Custom Finishes

When the rough-gun texture is acceptable but color needs to blend, stain-only application adds earth-tone coloring. Custom finishes—wood grain, weathered textures, or project-specific designs—are available for unique architectural shotcrete applications in Tennessee.

  • Earth-tone stain palette matched to Tennessee's local soil and rock
  • UV-resistant stain systems rated for Tennessee's climate
  • Wood grain textures for rustic architectural integration
  • Weathered and antiqued finishes for historic restoration

Tennessee-Specific Applications

TDOT highway retaining walls along I-40, commercial development, scenic corridor protection, and infrastructure facing across Tennessee. Every architectural shotcrete finish is applied over GSI's structural wall system—soil nail walls, retaining structures, and slope facing that provide the engineering performance the site requires.

Architectural Shotcrete Process in Tennessee

From structural wall design through final finish application, GSI delivers completed architectural shotcrete walls in five coordinated steps.

Step 1

Design & Finish Selection

GSI engineers design the structural wall while artisan teams develop finish mockups matched to Tennessee's local geology or architectural character.

Step 2

Structural Installation

Soil nail walls, retaining structures, or slope facing systems are installed and shotcreted to structural specifications.

Step 3

Sculpting Layer Application

A final sculpting layer of shotcrete is applied over the structural face, providing material for artisan finishing.

Step 4

Finish Sculpting & Detail

Artisans hand-carve geologic formations, stone patterns, or custom textures into the workable sculpting layer.

Staining & Sealing

Multi-color stain application matched to local tones. Protective sealer for UV, water, and wear resistance.

Why Choose GSI Architectural Shotcrete

  • Structure and aesthetics from one contractor. GSI designs, builds the structural wall, AND applies the architectural shotcrete finish—no separate subcontractors or coordination gaps.
  • Experienced artisan network. Our artisans specialize in geologic and architectural finishes—transforming shotcrete into realistic rock, stone, and custom textures.
  • Local geology matching. Finishes replicate Tennessee's specific Cades Cove fieldstone formations—not generic catalog textures.
  • Cost-effective versus masonry. Architectural shotcrete delivers traditional stone appearance at a fraction of the material, labor, and timeline cost.

Safety-Focused Project Support for Commercial Client in Tennessee

I wanted to take a moment to express gratitude and satisfaction with the job that GSI performed for me.  This work was inside a very congested industrial environment which also had other potential hazards with the presence of alcohol. In addition to confined quarters inside the building we had extreme weather conditions taking place outside the building.  My client was on a critical path timeline and this required GSI to return the week between Christmas and New Year’s. I knew that this was a mandatory week off for GSI but your organization came through, no ifs, ands or buts.

1.) The job superintendent, Ian Turner, handled himself remarkably. He was professional and no matter what the situation he took ownership.

2.) Every person on my job site with GSI had an extraordinary attitude. Case in point: As I was giving a “pep talk” I commented, “some of you guys may be ready to go home”. Emanuel from Georgia, raised his head looked at me and said “no, we wanna finish this job”. Every single person on this project is welcome to work on my projects anytime!

3.) Jarrod Hartshorn was as stated in your company policies willing to communicate 24/7. He answered his phone night or day and if he didn’t in a short while I could expect a phone call.  Jarrod also drove to my project to check on things with me and with the crew working.

4.) One of the best safety programs I have ever witnessed! I enjoy doing “flex and stretch“ with the crew every morning. Thank you!

5.) Hats off to all those volunteers the week after Christmas.

I wish I could remember all names but a special thanks to everyone on my project [including] Preston, Emanuel, Ian, Cole, Cliff, Jarrod, Zach, and the maintenance guy from Kentucky.

Slope Stabilization and Drilling for Project in Tennessee

Wanted to let you know how great GSI has been to work with out here at [our site]. We have had difficult drilling conditions since day 1 and they have worked tirelessly through bad soil and bad weather to make sure our project is a success. We have really appreciated them going the extra mile for us out here…

Reliable Commercial Project Support in Tennessee

I’d like to say that it was a pleasure working with GSI. I would like to personally commend the efforts of Josh Kelly and his crew; Steven, Lee, Austin, and Trent. They went above and beyond to meet our schedule by working long hours, more importantly long “hard” hours. They are an extremely hard-working bunch who never complained and did whatever it took to get the job done, they are a crew that I would recommend to anyone. This speaks more importantly than anything else to the caliber of work that GSI performs. I believe that the relationship formed between [our company] and GSI on this project will lead to future partnerships on projects down the road and I hope that the mutual respect we’ve developed on this project will continue for years to come. Thanks again and please let Josh and his crew know that their hard work was greatly appreciated.
