The Director of Operations is responsible for leading daily operations across multiple service lines, geographic regions, and project types to ensure safe, profitable, and efficient delivery of contracted work. This role manages the operational execution of dozens of simultaneous construction and mitigation projects, primarily through frontline field crews, superintendents, and regional operations leaders. The Director of Operations plays a critical role in advancing operational maturity, executing on organizational strategy, and preparing the business for scale. 

 

This position leads approximately 500 team members and is accountable for roughly $200 million in operational revenue annually. 

 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES 

Field Leadership & Execution 

  • Lead and inspire a national operations team delivering dozens of concurrent projects. Empower field crews, superintendents, and regional leaders to own execution and deliver top-tier results—safely, profitably, and on time. 
  • Promote consistent practices, accountability, and field-level problem solving across all regions and service lines. 
  • Visit sites occasionally to monitor operational activities, address client concerns, and build team morale. 

Operational Excellence & Scalability 

  • Deploy process improvements that simplify complexity, boost efficiency, and ensure accountability across the organization. 
  • Champion lean thinking and scalable systems that enable GSI to grow smarter and faster—without sacrificing speed or quality. 
  • Evaluate and implement LEAN construction methodologies and continuous improvement frameworks. 

People Development & Workforce Agility 

  • Shape a high-performance field workforce by identifying and growing emerging leaders. 
  • Support frontline agility and partner with People & Talent to ensure the right skills are in the right place at the right time. 
  • Manage internal communications and change management for operational initiatives. 

Cross-Functional Impact 

  • Serve as the connector between key functions—Sales, Estimating, Engineering, Safety, and Supply Chain—ensuring projects flow smoothly from planning to closeout. 
  • Remove barriers, accelerate resolution, and prepare and deliver clear and concise project documentation, updates, and reports to stakeholders at all levels. 

Financial & Risk Oversight 

  • Take ownership of operational budgets and margin performance across both GSI and ALC. 
  • Use data to uncover opportunities, drive accountability, and course-correct in real time. 
  • Embed a culture of safety, compliance, and quality in every project. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

Required 

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in construction, field operations, or industrial services 
  • At least 5 years in operational leadership, ideally across geographically-dispersed regions or service lines 
  • Strong operational leadership and field execution skills 
  • Data-driven decision-making capabilities with analytical acumen 
  • Demonstrated experience leading crews in high-velocity, short-duration projects 
  • Proficient in operations systems, field tools, and basic financial concepts 
  • Clear and confident communicator, capable of aligning diverse teams to common goals 
  • Proven ability to improve performance metrics through leadership and coaching 
  • Skilled in managing change and building engagement in dynamic environments 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Smartsheet 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment 
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities 
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion 
  • Must have a valid driver's license and qualify as a driver under company/insurance requirements 

Preferred 

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Construction Management, Operations, Engineering, or related field 
  • Familiarity with LEAN construction principles and continuous improvement frameworks 
  • Experience with GenAI tools, Smartsheet, Box, or similar operational technology platforms 
  • Knowledge of Canadian construction regulations and multi-entity organizational structures 
  • OSHA 30 certification or equivalent safety credential

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Significant travel required to field project sites across the continental US and Canada 
  • Work is conducted in both a standard office environment with moderate noise levels and on active construction sites in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions with moderate to high noise (hearing protection often required) 
  • Must be able to lift at least 75 pounds occasionally 
  • Frequent communication with remote crews, including early morning and after-hours operational coordination 
  • Must be able to stand, sit, talk, hear, reach, and use hands/fingers to operate computers, telephones, printers, and keyboards; must have vision to read documents and computer screens
