How Natural Disasters Cause Bridge Failures

When disaster strikes, the impact on bridges and adjacent infrastructure can be catastrophic. Common natural hazard threats include:

  • Flooding and Scour: Undermining bridge piers, abutments, or embankments
  • Earthquakes: Causing foundation damage, deck displacement, or structural instability
  • Landslides and Debris Flows: Blocking or damaging bridge approaches and access roads
  • Wildfires: Weakening slope integrity and making structures vulnerable to post-fire erosion
  • Heavy Rain and Storm Events: Leading to embankment collapse, sinkholes, and structural movement

These conditions often lead to dangerous instability not only at the structure, but throughout the surrounding terrain. Our approach focuses on repairing both the bridge system and the underlying geohazard.

Geohazard Mitigation Services for Emergency Infrastructure Recovery

Our team doesn’t just repair bridges—we fix the cause of the failure. We provide full-scope geohazard mitigation services, including:

  • Scour Remediation using riprap, grout bags, and advanced foundation systems
  • Embankment and Slope Stabilization with soil nails, shotcrete, and mesh systems
  • Bridge Foundation Reinforcement using high-capacity micropiles, tiebacks, and ground anchors
  • Void Filling and Compaction Grouting to restore ground integrity
  • Rockfall and Debris Flow Barriers for long-term protection
  • Limited Access Solutions using spider excavators and rope access crews for remote terrain

All of our systems are engineered in-house and delivered through our turnkey design-build delivery model, reducing delays and simplifying coordination.

Case Example: Emergency Bridge Stabilization After Flash Flooding

After flash flooding compromised a bridge's foundation and eroded its approach embankments, our team was on-site within 48 hours. We stabilized the slopes with soil nails and shotcrete, installed foundation micropiles beneath the compromised abutment, and rebuilt the drainage system to prevent future washouts. Traffic resumed within days, and the permanent fix was completed without lengthy detours or months of waiting for traditional contracting.

Safety-Focused Transportation Project Support in South Carolina

As told by GSI Project Development Engineer: We had a site walk today with the gang from the SCDOT district as well as the statewide construction engineering group. They had good things to say about the professionalism and intelligence of our crew. In particular, one of the construction engineers pointed out that in all his years of working on projects, ours was the best and most thorough safety meeting he had attended.
