Alabama's Infrastructure Faces Distinct Geohazard Risk
Northern Alabama sits within the Appalachian Ridge and Valley province and the Cumberland Plateau, where carbonate bedrock has dissolved over thousands of years into an active karst landscape. The result is sinkholes that open without warning beneath highways, utility corridors, and commercial sites across Lawrence, Madison, and Limestone counties. Along the Gulf Coast, a different threat dominates: hurricane storm surge and flood-driven erosion that undercuts bridge approaches and coastal roadways from Mobile Bay to the Florida line.
GSI addresses this as part of a broader Subsurface Void and Sinkhole Problems pattern affecting ALDOT's network.
