Landslide Repair Across Louisiana

Louisiana's landslide exposure is unusual for a low-relief state, concentrated on the steeper loess bluffs along the Mississippi River in the state's northeast and the levee-adjacent embankments DOTD maintains statewide, where soft alluvial and deltaic soils beneath fill embankments settle unevenly and trigger slope movement that standard Gulf Coast maintenance practices haven't fully resolved.

This pattern is consistent with the broader Steep Slope Stability Issues challenges GSI addresses across the state.

How GSI Delivers Landslide Repair in Louisiana

Soil Nail Wall Reinforcement

GSI's soil nail systems for Louisiana embankments account for the soft alluvial soil beneath the fill, anchoring into whatever competent material exists at depth rather than assuming firm bearing close to the surface. GSI's soil nailing capability supports this step.

Deep Drainage Systems

Louisiana's high water table and river-influenced groundwater require drainage systems designed around sustained saturation rather than seasonal wet-dry cycling — GSI sizes horizontal drains for continuous, not intermittent, water management. This is one application of GSI's broader Soil Nail Launcher™ expertise.

Launcher Technology for Difficult Soils

Soft, saturated Louisiana soils collapse around conventional boreholes readily — the Soil Nail Launcher™ installs reinforcement without requiring the soil to hold an open hole. GSI's horizontal drains experience informs this approach.

This approach is informed by GSI's broader landslide emergency response work across Louisiana.

Louisiana Landslide Repair Process

GSI follows a systematic five-step process to deliver landslide repair solutions in DOTD corridors and beyond.

Step 1

Site Assessment

GSI engineers evaluate conditions and severity at your Louisiana site.

Step 2

Root Cause Investigation

In-house geologists investigate the specific conditions driving the issue, referencing Louisiana's deltaic coastal sediments and rapidly eroding shoreline.

Step 3

Engineered Solution Design

Custom design matched to Louisiana's site-specific geology, hydrology, and infrastructure loading.

Step 4

Design/Build Execution

One team executes the engineered solution under a single DOTD-ready contract.

Performance Warranty

Design/build/warranty coverage on every landslide repair solution installed in Louisiana.

Why Louisiana Trusts GSI for Landslide Repair

Engineered for Louisiana's conditions. GSI designs Louisiana slope repairs for sustained saturation and soft alluvial bearing conditions — not the seasonal wet-dry cycle standard slope repair specifications assume. It's backed by GSI's broader general contractors and asset owners capability.

Design/build delivery. A single accountable team delivers design and build — closing the gap between what's designed and what's built.

DOTD specification compliance. Project records and construction methods conform to DOT requirements from initial design submittal.

Landslide Repair for Infrastructure in California

“I would like to thank you and the county for repairing the road slide on Dunne avenue. The repair is excellent and the contractors were very efficient and skilled. You personally did a great job of providing information about the status of the project. My family appreciates your efforts.”

Emergency Landslide Repair in Wyoming

In 2017, another well above normal snowpack winter and heavy spring rains resulted in 23 new landslides, which damaged or threatened WYDOT roads. WYDOT turned to GSI to help respond to these emergency situations. GSI was able to respond very quickly and in most cases had personnel on site to assess the site within 24 hours. They would provide a proposal for remediation with a preliminary design and estimated costs within 48 hours in most cases. During 2017, GSI was selected to perform remediation with contracts at six separate sites. In all cases, they were prepared to mobilize to the sites and begin work within a week of being given notice to proceed.

A unique element of these emergency contracts was a partnership, between WYDOT and GSI, by which WYDOT provided some logistical support such as traffic control and providing water for drilling operations so that GSI could focus its efforts on performing the specialty work. This arrangement resulted in cost effective, efficient, successful projects. When responding to emergency landslide repair, time truly is money, the sooner a landslide can be remediated before it has a chance to grow, the less expensive it is to repair. In the past, WYDOT has experienced situations in which, landslides could possibly have been remediated quicker, experienced further failure during drawn out conventional design and contracting methods resulting in higher costs due to the additional failure. GSI uses various types of innovative geo-technology in their landslide remediation projects….

All of these projects were completed on schedule, even with cold weather conditions and snow storms ….

All of the stabilization projects that GSI completed for WYDOT included a warranty to repair any of the remediation that would happen to fail, but to date none of the work that they have performed has required any repair. I would highly recommend GeoStabilization International to perform emergency landslide and slope remediation work. They have the resources, personnel, and expertise to respond to your emergency in a timely, professional manner.
