Architectural Shotcrete Solutions

West Virginia's I-64, I-77, I-79, US-19 New River Gorge, US-48 require engineered retaining walls for slope stabilization, road widening, and grade separation. Standard rough-gun shotcrete provides the structural performance—but leaves a gray concrete surface that clashes with West Virginia's New River Gorge sandstone and surrounding landscape. In scenic corridors, historic districts, and commercially visible locations, that visual impact creates problems with permitting agencies, community stakeholders, and property values.

WVDOT and West Virginia's commercial developers increasingly require retaining walls that deliver full structural performance while matching the character of the surrounding environment. Architectural shotcrete solves this—transforming structural walls into realistic rock formations, cut stone facades, or custom-textured surfaces at a fraction of the cost of traditional masonry construction.

Architectural Shotcrete Finish Options for West Virginia

Geologic Finishes — Simple and Detailed

Geologic finishes are the most popular architectural shotcrete option, transforming structural walls into realistic rock formations matching West Virginia's native New River Gorge sandstone, Appalachian sandstone ledges. Simple geologic finishes use up to 3 colors with low-relief formations. Detailed geologic finishes use 3+ colors with high-relief outcroppings replicating specific local formations.

  • Hand-sculpted textures replicating New River Gorge sandstone formations
  • Multi-color staining systems matching local rock tones
  • Low-relief (simple) or high-relief (detailed) options based on visibility and budget
  • Custom molds created from actual local rock samples for maximum realism

Stone Mason and Ashlar Finishes

For historic districts, commercial developments, and urban infrastructure, stamped or hand-carved stone mason and ashlar finishes deliver traditional masonry appearance at a fraction of the cost and timeline.

  • Stamped stone matrix — stacked rock pattern with 1–2 stain colors
  • Stamped ashlar — ashlar block pattern ideal for faster production
  • Hand-carved stone — deep texture and detailed staining for maximum realism
  • Hand-carved ashlar — carved joints with 2+ stain colors for authentic character

Stain-Only and Custom Finishes

When the rough-gun texture is acceptable but color needs to blend, stain-only application adds earth-tone coloring. Custom finishes—wood grain, weathered textures, or project-specific designs—are available for unique architectural shotcrete applications in West Virginia.

  • Earth-tone stain palette matched to West Virginia's local soil and rock
  • UV-resistant stain systems rated for West Virginia's climate
  • Wood grain textures for rustic architectural integration
  • Weathered and antiqued finishes for historic restoration

West Virginia-Specific Applications

WVDOT highway retaining walls along I-64, commercial development, scenic corridor protection, and infrastructure facing across West Virginia. Every architectural shotcrete finish is applied over GSI's structural wall system—soil nail walls, retaining structures, and slope facing that provide the engineering performance the site requires.

Architectural Shotcrete Process in West Virginia

From structural wall design through final finish application, GSI delivers completed architectural shotcrete walls in five coordinated steps.

Step 1

Design & Finish Selection

GSI engineers design the structural wall while artisan teams develop finish mockups matched to West Virginia's local geology or architectural character.

Step 2

Structural Installation

Soil nail walls, retaining structures, or slope facing systems are installed and shotcreted to structural specifications.

Step 3

Sculpting Layer Application

A final sculpting layer of shotcrete is applied over the structural face, providing material for artisan finishing.

Step 4

Finish Sculpting & Detail

Artisans hand-carve geologic formations, stone patterns, or custom textures into the workable sculpting layer.

Staining & Sealing

Multi-color stain application matched to local tones. Protective sealer for UV, water, and wear resistance.

Repair for Transportation Infrastructure in West Virginia

“I just want to let you all know what an awesome job Cristian Penson and his crew did in the time that they were here in WV. These guys worked hard, kept their jobs nice and free of trash and debris, were very courteous to myself and my crew. Their quality of work was above and beyond. We set deadlines for him and his crew. We had scheduled to complete a 166’ slip repair in [Monongalia County] on 6/15/19 and they completed this project a day earlier than scheduled plus a 58’ slip that we added to him. Hats off to these gentlemen for a job well done!!! We hate to see Cristian and his crew leave [our district] but he will always be welcome back.“

Retaining Wall Stabilization for Commercial Property

Riley, You, Jason and the GSI crew did an outstanding job stabilizing and resurfacing our retaining wall. We are extremely happy that we selected GSI for this project. All of you were efficient, flexible, knowledgeable, and professional. You and Jason were quick to respond to our requests, resolve any minor problems that occurred, and keep the project on schedule. We feel that this was all done at a reasonable price. Our wall looks great and I’m sure it will last for a very long time….

Please extend our thanks to everyone involved. We would highly recommend GSI to anyone who has a similar project.

Slope Stabilization for Pipeline Project in West Virginia

As told by GSI Project Development Engineer: A pipeline contractor dug a trench through the county road, down a steep bank, below a stream, and then up the next mountain to install the pipes. When they went to backfill the pipes in the roadway and embankment, the soil slipped and they couldn’t keep the backfill in place. We got a call to come out and look at the site. We gave them a proposal to build a GCS toe buttress at the stream bed, and then have the pipeline contractor construct a reinforced slope to rebuild the embankment. As the GCS was nearing the top, a WVDOH engineer stopped out to the site. The engineer was asking the pipeline contractor what the plan was, as he had general concern that the road would be repaired back to his satisfaction. As soon as the contractor mentioned GSI was working on the job, the county engineer said ‘OK, as long as GSI is on the job, I’m good here’.
