Enhance Your New Mexico Project

Structural shotcrete walls are essential for stability and reinforcement across New Mexico's I-25 highway retaining walls—but they don't have to remain purely functional. GSI's sculpted shotcrete finishes provide an opportunity to enhance the visual appeal of your project while maintaining full structural integrity.

Our network of experienced sculpting artisans specializes in creating hand-sculpted textures, transforming shotcrete walls into stunning natural rock formations, masonry-style facades, or custom-designed patterns. Using advanced sculpting techniques and expert craftsmanship, we ensure each New Mexico project seamlessly integrates with its surrounding environment—matching adobe and sandstone Southwest character, volcanic basalt textures and delivering both functionality and artistic excellence.

Sculpted Shotcrete Finish Options for New Mexico

Rough Gun Shotcrete Finish

GSI's standard structural shotcrete wall features a natural light gray concrete with a rough-gun finish, showcasing minor irregularities and waves that conform to the retained cut slope surface. For New Mexico projects requiring enhanced aesthetics, custom finish upgrades are available.

Stain Only

Add color for a natural, blended appearance. Choose from a variety of earth-tone shades to complement New Mexico's surrounding environment—matching the natural tones of adobe and sandstone Southwest character, volcanic basalt textures. Stain-only application enhances the rough-gun texture without additional sculpting, offering a cost-effective aesthetic upgrade for New Mexico highway corridors and infrastructure walls.

Simple Geologic Finish

A subtle rock-like sculpted shotcrete finish to enhance natural appearance in high-visibility areas across New Mexico. The simple geologic finish uses up to 3 colors with low-relief, subtle formations—ideal for highway retaining walls and infrastructure projects where natural blending matters but dramatic detail is not required.

Detailed Geologic Finish

The most realistic rock-like sculpted shotcrete finish, designed to seamlessly blend into New Mexico's surrounding adobe and sandstone Southwest character, volcanic basalt textures formations. Detailed geologic finishes use 3+ colors to achieve a textured, realistic look with high-relief detail and outcroppings that replicate the specific geologic character of the project site.

Stone Mason/Ashlar Finish

Achieve the look of cut stone or ashlar masonry using custom stamping or hand-carving techniques, with the option to enhance the finish further with dye or stain—perfect for New Mexico projects requiring a classic or rustic aesthetic. Available styles include:

  • Stamped Stone Matrix — Stacked rock pattern, stamped with 1–2 stain colors for a clean, uniform look
  • Stamped Ashlar — Stamped ashlar pattern, 1–2 colors, ideal for faster production timelines
  • Hand-Carved Stone — Labor-intensive with deep texture and detailed staining for a realistic finish
  • Hand-Carved Ashlar — Hand-carved joints and 2+ stain colors for a richly crafted, authentic appearance

New Mexico Project Applications

Sculpted shotcrete finishes serve New Mexico projects across multiple sectors: I-25 highway retaining walls, Santa Fe commercial development, Rio Grande Gorge scenic corridor walls. Every sculpted finish is applied over GSI's structural shotcrete wall system—providing the engineering performance the site requires with the aesthetic quality the project demands.

Sculpted Shotcrete Process in New Mexico

From finish selection through sealed completion, GSI delivers sculpted shotcrete walls for New Mexico projects in five coordinated steps.

Step 1

Finish Selection & Design

GSI works with your team to select the sculpted shotcrete finish that best matches New Mexico's local geology, architectural character, or project design requirements.

Step 2

Structural Wall Installation

GSI engineers install the structural soil nail wall, retaining structure, or slope facing system—the engineered foundation that the sculpted finish will cover.

Step 3

Sculpting Layer & Artisan Work

A sculpting layer of shotcrete is applied over the structural face. Experienced artisans hand-sculpt textures, formations, or patterns while the material is workable.

Step 4

Staining & Color Application

Multi-color stain application matched to local rock tones or specified architectural colors, building natural depth and variation across the wall face.

Protective Sealing

UV-resistant protective sealer applied over completed staining. Finish engineered to withstand the full range of weather and exposure conditions in the project area.

Why Choose Sculpted Shotcrete?

  • Aesthetic Integration. Sculpted shotcrete finishes blend with New Mexico's surrounding geology or architectural style—transforming functional retaining walls into features that enhance the project environment rather than detracting from it.
  • Durability & Longevity. Unlike traditional masonry, shotcrete is monolithic, reducing points of failure over time. The structural wall and aesthetic finish are one continuous system—no mortar joints to deteriorate, no veneer panels to separate.
  • Customizable Designs. Choose from geologic, stone mason, ashlar, stain-only, or custom-designed textures and colors to achieve the look your New Mexico project requires. Every finish can be tailored to match specific local formations or architectural standards.
  • Cost-Effective Enhancement. Sculpted shotcrete delivers aesthetic results at a fraction of the cost compared to traditional stone or masonry wall construction—with faster installation timelines and lower long-term maintenance.

Professional and Safety-Focused Crew in New Mexico

Roger is 65 years old and has been in the construction business his whole adult life. He explained to me that he felt compelled to call and give praise to Brice Steffan, his crew and his managers, as well as GSI as a company. “GSI is one class act, in their people and their safety,” Mr. Lamoreux explained. He said although this crew was “young in age, Brice at 25, they all carry themselves maturely and professionally. These boys were very impressive, just like on their shirts, Work Hard or Go Home.” He ended the call with saying he hopes he gets to work with us again.”

Professional and Cooperative Crew in New Mexico

Marty, I really appreciate all of your cooperation and the cooperation of your crew. They’re great people doing an amazing job. We have placed all of the first 4 rows with very little problems as of Saturday the 28th of March. These guys really deserve a pat on the back from my standpoint. I know they’ve performed a lot of work elsewhere but, this job is going amazing. You have a great crew and they know their jobs very well. The most standoutish part is that they get along on site great and perform in a very professional manner. Thank you for all your help Marty.

Emergency Retaining Wall Repair in New Mexico

I had the opportunity to work with GSI on an emergency repair of an earth retaining wall on Highway NM 475 at MM 11. This project was an emergency repair because the earth retaining wall is part of the roadway embankment, which was failing. Also, NM 475 is the only highway used to get to Ski Santa Fe. The NMDOT requested that GSI have repairs to the wall made before the kickoff to ski season. As I remember, there was not much advanced notice to proceed given. GSI was able to work in inclement weather, traveling hazardous roadways to get to the job site. The crew was good, they concentrated on production. They understood that this project needed to be expedited. The crew worked like a well-oiled machine. Apparently, some of the crew worked together on a previous project for six weeks. It showed because, for example, if one guy needed a pipe wrench, another guy already had it ready for him. Like I said above, the crew worked on production, they hustled, and did it all in a very safe manner. At the end, the wall had been completely repaired two days after the opening of Ski Santa Fe, which was good for all. I would highly recommend GSI on any future NMDOT projects.
