Overview
The Shop Mechanic plays a critical role in maintaining and optimizing a fleet of specialized construction equipment used in roadway safety operations. This position is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance to ensure equipment reliability, safety, and minimal downtime.
This is a hands-on role for a highly skilled mechanic who takes pride in quality work, solves problems quickly, and operates with a strong sense of ownership. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment and is comfortable supporting both shop and field operations as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment, trucks, and specialty machinery
- Diagnose and troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and diesel systems
- Complete welding and light fabrication to support equipment repair and modification
- Respond to equipment breakdowns and execute timely repairs to minimize operational delays
- Maintain accurate service records, inspections, and work orders
- Support equipment readiness by coordinating with operations and field teams
- Operate shop equipment, including forklifts, safely and efficiently
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safety-compliant work environment
Qualifications
Required:
- 5+ years of experience maintaining and repairing heavy equipment or construction machinery
- Strong troubleshooting skills across hydraulic, electrical, and diesel systems
- Welding and fabrication experience
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet CMV driver qualification requirements
- Ability to obtain a CDL (if not already held) within a defined timeframe
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and team-oriented mindset
Preferred:
- Technical training or certifications in mechanics or related field
- OEM or manufacturer-specific training (e.g., CAT, Komatsu)
- Experience with DOT equipment and roadway construction machinery
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Primarily shop-based with occasional field support
- Exposure to varying weather conditions when working outside
- Ability to lift 50 lbs regularly and work on feet for extended periods
- Comfortable working around heavy equipment and in physically demanding conditions
