The Role

As an Estimator I, you will play a critical role in winning and setting up complex geotechnical and heavy civil projects for success. You will develop detailed estimates, analyze drawings and specifications, and engage directly with suppliers and subcontractors to build accurate, defensible, and executable pricing.

With a minimum of two years of relevant experience, you are expected to manage most estimating tasks independently while actively learning from senior estimators and collaborating closely with engineering and project teams. This role is ideal for someone who wants to move fast, learn deeply, and grow into larger scopes of responsibility.

What You Will Own

Estimate Development & Analysis

  • Prepare detailed quantity take-offs and cost estimates for assigned trades and scopes.
  • Independently interpret drawings, specifications, and geotechnical information to determine material, labor, and equipment needs.
  • Develop pricing for self-performed work including shotcrete, soil nails, grouting, drainage, and other specialty construction activities.

Market & Cost Intelligence

  • Solicit, analyze, and level subcontractor and vendor quotes for completeness, risk, and alignment with scope.
  • Attend pre-bid site visits to understand field conditions, access constraints, and constructability risks.
  • Maintain and contribute to historical cost data to improve estimate accuracy over time.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with engineers and project managers to validate assumptions and pricing strategies.
  • Support conceptual budgets for early-stage pursuits and design-build work.
  • Participate in project handoff meetings, ensuring estimating intent and risk assumptions are clearly communicated to execution teams.

Operational Discipline

  • Deliver estimates on time, complete, and in strict alignment with bid requirements.
  • Continuously improve estimating processes, tools, and templates as part of a learning organization.

What Sets You Apart

We are looking beyond entry-level capability. We are looking for judgment, curiosity, and trajectory.

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years of estimating experience in heavy civil, geotechnical, or related construction environments.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Technology, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain assumptions and risks.
  • Working knowledge of heavy civil construction methods, including earthwork, reinforced concrete, shotcrete, drainage, foundations, and retaining structures.
  • Understanding of how multiple trades integrate to deliver complex infrastructure projects.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and Excel.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to work extended hours during bid cycles as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with design-build delivery models.
  • Exposure to geotechnical or specialty construction.
  • PE, EIT, or CM certification (or progress toward).
  • Experience with estimating software (B2W preferred).

Physical & Work Environment

  • Primarily office-based work with moderate noise levels typical of a collaborative office.
  • Regular use of computers, phones, and standard office equipment.
  • Occasional travel (up to ~10%) for site visits and project pursuits within North America.

Location Expectation

For non-traveling roles, we strongly prefer candidates who can work from our Westminster, CO office on a hybrid schedule. Proximity to engineering, operations, and leadership accelerates learning, accountability, and advancement.

Leadership Perspective

This role is best suited for someone who wants to graduate from estimating tasks to estimating ownership - someone who understands that pricing decisions shape project outcomes, risk profiles, and long-term profitability. Solid estimators execute. Exceptional estimators think ahead, challenge assumptions, and scale their impact.
