Utah Expansive Soil Stabilization

Utah's Salt Lake Valley, Utah Valley, and St. George metro areas sit atop expansive clay formations—Mancos Shale, North Horn Formation, and lacustrine deposits—that swell 4-8% with moisture absorption and shrink during Utah's arid summer months. This seasonal cycle cracks highway pavements, buckles bridge approaches, ruptures water and sewer lines, and progressively damages commercial and transportation infrastructure across the Wasatch Front and southwestern Utah.

GeoStabilization International engineers chemical stabilization programs that permanently modify clay mineralogy, eliminating the swell potential that drives annual damage. Helical pier systems transfer foundation loads below the active zone to stable bearing strata—permanently decoupling structures from expansive soil movement.

Utah's Expansive Soil Problem

Utah's Wasatch Front corridor, Utah Valley, and St. George metro area sit atop aggressive expansive clay formations. Mancos Shale, North Horn Formation, and lacustrine deposits swell 4-8% with moisture absorption—generating seasonal ground movements that crack pavements, buckle bridge slabs, rupture utilities, and progressively damage infrastructure across UDOT's highest-traffic corridors. Utah's arid climate amplifies the damage: extreme moisture differentials between irrigated and non-irrigated zones create localized swell that conventional maintenance cannot address.

Permanent Chemical Treatment

GeoStabilization International engineers chemical stabilization programs that inject lime, cement, or proprietary treatment agents into the expansive clay zone—permanently modifying the mineralogy that drives swell. Post-treatment swell potential drops by 60-80%, eliminating the seasonal volume change that has been destroying your infrastructure year after year. Treatment is designed using site-specific Atterberg limits, swell pressure testing, and moisture profiling to optimize agent selection and dosage for Utah's specific clay characteristics.

Helical Pier Foundation Solutions

For structures already damaged by expansive soil movement, GeoStabilization International installs helical pier systems that transfer foundation loads below the active zone. These piers screw into stable bearing strata beneath the expansive clay horizon, permanently decoupling your structure from soil movement. Combined with perimeter moisture management, helical piers provide a permanent solution that eliminates the annual repair cycle.

Utah Expansive Soil Treatment Process

GeoStabilization International delivers permanent expansive soil solutions across Utah's Wasatch Front and southern corridor in five steps.

Step 1

Site Consultation

Call (855) 599-5217. Our ground improvement engineers discuss swell damage, infrastructure impacts, and site history at your Utah location.

Step 2

Swell Characterization

Laboratory testing quantifies clay mineralogy, swell potential, and active zone depth—defining the treatment parameters for your site.

Step 3

Treatment Program Design

Engineers specify chemical agents, dosage rates, and treatment depths optimized for Mancos Shale or lacustrine clay conditions.

Step 4

Chemical Treatment

Crews inject stabilization agents into the active zone—permanently modifying clay minerals and eliminating seasonal volume change.

Verification

Swell testing confirms permanent mineralogy modification. Documentation supports UDOT compliance and long-term asset management.

Eliminate the Annual Repair Cycle

Utah infrastructure owners spend millions annually repairing expansive soil damage—the same pavements, the same bridge approaches, the same utility corridors, damaged by the same seasonal swell cycle. GeoStabilization International's chemical stabilization treats the root cause permanently. One treatment eliminates the swell potential. The repair cycle ends. The annual maintenance budget redirects to other priorities. That permanent ROI is why UDOT and Utah's infrastructure community choose GSI for expansive soil solutions.

Roadway Stabilization in Maryland

Thanks for another successful project – one that was completed just in time, under difficult conditions and just before a major rehabilitation was required. This partnership has grown to be an extremely valuable tool for attacking failing roads in steep environments.

Slope Stabilization for Homeowner in Ohio

My wife and I live in Ohio and we are residential clients of GSI. Your team has been securing our lakefront cliff face over the past two weeks. I am writing you today to commend you on your outstanding team members.

We had three rows of soil nails installed across about a 170' cliff edge overlooking Lake Erie. These were connected with a steel mesh, and the shotcrete facing is being finished as I write. We have been nothing but pleased with the results. In general, I can tell you that your crew has been dependable, respectful, friendly, polite, and quiet (at least as quiet as they can be). They have been flexible in their plans, and they have worked extremely hard. They even clean up after themselves after work each day. I have to say that I wasn't sure what to expect, but we have been pleasantly surprised.

The project manager, Jared McDowell, has really kept the project moving -- they will finish almost a week early. There have been some roadblocks along the way - like locating a private underground natural gas pipeline in the yard and dealing with trouble getting machinery due to hurricanes - but Jared found a way to keep things going in the right direction. He was personable, and he listened to our concerns and answered our questions. I also appreciate the fact the he never gave the impression that he was too busy to talk to us. The other primary crew members Dylan Battaglia, Michal Kopij, Aaron Cordova are tremendous workers and nice guys. We would gladly work with them again if the need ever arose.

I would also like to make a special note about our project development engineer, Greg Bachman. Thank goodness for him. We live at the end of a cul-de-sac, and we needed written permission from our neighbor to cross part of his lawn. Let's just say that our neighbor is a challenging person, and leave it at that. Greg spent several weeks meeting with different local engineering firms because our neighbor trusted their opinions and would not sign until the local firms saw our plans. I think most other compaines would have bailed at that point, but Greg stuck with us. Greg then had a face to face meeting with our neighbor and even agreed to have the GSI legal team simplify the contract language for Al's benefit. He also managed all the dealings with the city for permitting and the SWPPP plans. We are so grateful to have the GSI solution implemented as it was really the only cost-effective option available to us -- other than letting our property fall into Lake Erie. Greg went WAY above and beyond, and we can't thank him enough. I told Greg that if he ever needs a reference, we are here for him.

This has been a really long endeavor, and we are so pleased to have the solution in place. It is a great feeling to know that our family and friends will be able to enjoy the view and feel completely safe. Thank you for your solution and congratulations on fielding a great team. Best of luck to you in the future.

Geohazard Stabilization for Railway Infrastructure

GSI was very professional and easy to work with throughout the whole process. They communicated well and were accommodating to our production needs, while allowing us to work with them to help them accomplish what they needed to get done as well. Dan, Amanda, Zech, Craig, and Justin were all great. It was actually pretty refreshing to be able to work with a group that was so easy deal with, especially for a contractor coming in from out of town. They all seemed to have Midwestern values and work ethic. If you have any questions whatsoever, I would be more than happy to discuss. Based on our experience, I would confidently and quickly recommend GSI to anyone needing similar geo stabilization.

End Utah's Expansive Soil Cycle

One chemical treatment permanently eliminates the swell destroying your Utah infrastructure. GeoStabilization International's ground improvement engineers are ready for your project.
