W-Beam Guardrails

RoadGuard is the leading guardrail contractor in the U.S. As such, we construct and install high-quality W-beam guardrails that separates the traveling public and construction works from danger such as on-coming traffic or a cliff. W-beams are the most common guardrails as they are cost-effective and reliably redirect vehicles to the road in case of a collision with the guardrail.

The RoadGuard team fabricates and installs superior guardrails with wood or steel guardrail posts.

W-Beam Specifications

A W-beam guardrail consists of one “valley” and two “humps” as technicians turn the steel coil into a W-shaped beam. These guardrails have a series of horizontal beams that we secure to posts at regular intervals.

W-beam dimensions are as follows:

  • Length: 13 feet 6.5 inches or 12 feet 6 inches of highway coverage
  • Height: 12.25 inches
  • Depth: 3.25 inches

The Main Components of a W-Beam Guardrail System include:

  • Steel w-beams: These sturdy steel beams prevent vehicles from running off the road with heavy-duty construction that absorbs impact and redirects cars.
  • Guardrail posts: These posts can be made of various materials. You might use wood or steel posts to attach the beams every 6 feet and 3 inches along the rail.
  • End-terminals: We can fit the ends of beam guardrails with end treatments so that it flexes and gives way if a car collides with it in order to slow a vehicle down rather than penetrating the vehicle.
  • Delineators: We can fit delineators to guardrails for enhanced visibility at night. Reflective delineators help drivers see the road's edge clearly, guiding them along the path.

W-Beams and Road Safety

W-beam guardrails are semi-rigid barriers that absorb some of the energy of a colliding vehicle. Upon impact, energy is distributed through the guardrail system, effectively spreading it out to minimize the severity of accidents. This characteristic also helps reduce the risk of vehicles breaking through the guardrail. However, it is impossible to guarantee that a vehicle traveling at high speed with high ground clearance will not break through the barrier.

These beams also redirect vehicles upon impact, guiding the vehicle along the rail on a safe travel path and away from unforgiving objects and terrain beyond the rail.

W-Beam Applications

W-beams improve the overall safety of public roads and highways. The use of these guardrails on highways varies from state to state. The mounting posts also differ between states, as some areas use wooden mounting posts and others install steel posts.
