Purpose-Built Limited Access Drill Rigs

for geohazard repair conditions

Purpose-Built Drill Rigs

GeoStabilization International designs and operates purpose-built limited access drill rigs engineered for steep slopes, remote terrain, and complex geohazard repair conditions. Conventional drilling equipment is rarely suited for the unpredictable environments encountered across Canada, from steep rock cuts in British Columbia to remote pipeline corridors in Alberta or forested ridgelines throughout Ontario. GSI’s custom fleet is built specifically to perform in these challenging locations while maintaining precision, safety, and efficiency.

Engineered Rigs for Complex Geohazard Sites

GSI’s fleet includes helicopter-mobile wagon drills, crane-basket mounted systems, spider-excavator mounted platforms, and other specialty rigs developed for confined, unstable, or high-angle terrain. These systems allow drilling crews to access slopes, rock faces, and remote corridors where standard equipment cannot operate, ensuring reliable installation in demanding geological conditions.

Benefits of Limited Access Drilling

All of GeoStabilization’s purpose-built equipment provides the following benefits:

Geohazard sites often present narrow stabilization windows, particularly during active landslide movement or when working on unstable rock masses. GSI’s custom drilling systems enable rapid installation of soil nails, anchors, and other stabilization elements, reducing risk and helping maintain the safety of adjacent infrastructure. Using the correct technology for the terrain directly improves project outcomes.

Unstable slopes frequently exist near a factor of safety close to one, meaning even small disturbances can trigger additional movement. GSI’s purpose-built rigs are selected and configured to minimize excavation, reduce surface disturbance, and limit the need for access road construction. This approach supports safer environments and may also reduce permitting requirements on environmentally sensitive sites in Canada.

Many geohazard locations are difficult or impossible to reach with conventional equipment. GSI’s limited access rigs can be transported along rugged access tracks or mobilized by helicopter, crane, or long-reach lift equipment when required. This capability allows the team to operate on high-angle slopes, elevated rock masses, remote pipeline alignments, and mountainous regions throughout the country.
