Rockfall Control

Rockfall Control Solutions

GeoStabilization International provides comprehensive rockfall control solutions to protect infrastructure, communities, and natural landscapes across Canada. Steep terrain, fractured rock, freeze–thaw cycles, and variable climates frequently contribute to rockfall activity, especially in regions such as British Columbia, Alberta, and parts of Atlantic Canada. GSI’s engineered systems help stabilize slopes, reduce hazard potential, and maintain safe travel on vulnerable corridors.

Engineered Rockfall Protection Systems

GSI designs and installs a wide range of rockfall protection systems that address both immediate hazards and long-term slope performance. Each system is selected based on detailed geotechnical assessment, site geometry, and anticipated rockfall energy levels.

Pinned Mesh

Tensioned mesh systems provide secure containment for loose rock and shallow instability.

Wire Mesh

Reinforced mesh enhances slope protection in areas with moderate rockfall exposure.

Draped Mesh

Flexible mesh systems guide falling debris downslope while maintaining natural slope contours.

Cable Net Mesh

High-capacity cable nets offer increased energy dissipation for larger or higher-velocity rockfall events.

Anchored Mesh

Fully anchored systems are engineered for slopes requiring additional restraint and ground support.

Rockfall Netting

Custom netting configurations address localized geological challenges and variable slope geometries.

Boulder Breaking

Specialized breaking techniques support safe removal or reduction of large unstable rock masses.

GSI’s On-Slope Approach

Rockfall conditions vary significantly across Canadian terrain, and on-slope treatments often provide the most effective long-term control. Systems such as draped mesh and attenuators help manage rockfall energy while preserving natural terrain features. GSI’s engineers assess each slope using advanced trajectory modeling and energy analysis to select the most appropriate system for site conditions.

Benefits of Rockfall Control

Implementing a well-designed rockfall control system can provide:

  • Increased safety for travelers, infrastructure, and work crews

  • Reduced risk of road closures or service interruptions

  • Lower long-term maintenance costs

  • Improved reliability for transportation, utilities, and slope-adjacent assets

Our Process

GSI follows an engineered, step-by-step methodology to ensure effective and durable rockfall control:

  1. Slope Analysis: Detailed assessment supported by rockfall trajectory and energy modeling.

  2. System Selection: Recommendation of targeted treatments such as mesh, attenuators, or anchored systems.

  3. Professional Installation: Performed by trained rock remediation technicians using specialized drilling and limited-access equipment.
  4. Inspection and Maintenance: Routine evaluation to maintain system performance and identify maintenance needs.

Rockfall Mitigation and Scaling for Mining Operations in Canada

Hey Trevor, I gotta [sic] admit, I was a little worried after our progress on the first day of scaling. I wondered if I’d missed something in analyzing that slope! However, on day two, the guys were able to get the bulk of the loose material down in the two areas I was concerned about. They also installed two prisms into the blocks adjacent to the areas scaled so we can monitor any changes in the slope.
The team who came to site were the epitome of professional, not to mention a lot of fun to work with. There was never any point where I felt they were working unsafely. I am most impressed with the entire operation.
I think we were able to remove 100% of the immediate hazard for that area, and 75-80% of the overall hazard. Job well done!

Successful Project and Teamwork in British Columbia, Canada

The final product for the winter looks very well done and Matthew was great to work with. I look forward to working with your team next Spring and on future projects.

Emergency Rockfall Mitigation for Mining Operations

I recently interacted with some of your rockfall division guys. I have never seen an outfit as competent on safety measures nor any contractors who worked as hard as your guys do. During the work, I was in a room with your guys and some other contractors, and your guys were head and shoulders above the rest in all aspects.
