Rockfall Containment

ROCKFALL MITIGATION SOLUTIONS

Rockfall Containment

Rockfall containment systems play a critical role where falling rock hazards cannot be fully eliminated at the source. GeoStabilization International delivers engineered rockfall containment solutions that reduce exposure to falling debris, protect people and infrastructure, and maintain safe access along transportation corridors and developed areas across Canada.

Steep slopes throughout Canada are affected by freeze–thaw cycles, weathering, groundwater, and seasonal runoff that can trigger repeated rockfall events. When unmanaged, these hazards can lead to roadway and rail closures, safety incidents, and costly emergency response. GSI partners with transportation agencies, municipalities, utilities, and private owners to manage this risk using field-proven containment systems designed for long-term performance under Canadian conditions.

What Methods Can Be Used for Rockfall Containment?

Rockfall containment methods are selected based on slope geometry, rock size and energy, access constraints, and performance requirements. Common containment approaches include catch fences, rockfall netting, mesh and drape systems, and securing unstable rock material directly to the slope.

Catch fences are installed downslope to intercept falling rock before it reaches infrastructure. Rockfall netting and mesh systems are anchored to slopes to control movement and guide debris safely downslope. In some cases, unstable rock is secured to the slope using rock bolts, shotcrete, or chemical resins to prevent detachment altogether. GSI’s engineers evaluate site-specific conditions and select the most appropriate containment strategy for each application.

Catch Fences as a Rockfall Containment Solution

Catch fences are a widely used containment solution where space allows interception of falling rock. These systems typically consist of high-tensile mesh supported by steel posts and anchored foundations designed to absorb impact energy.

Benefits of catch fences include effective debris containment, constructability in challenging terrain, and predictable performance under repeated impact. Systems can also be configured to minimize visual impact while meeting safety and performance requirements. GSI designs and installs catch fence systems tailored to anticipated rock size, energy levels, and site constraints, providing durable protection for roadways, rail lines, and facilities.

Rockfall Netting

Rockfall netting is used where continuous slope coverage is required or where catch fences are not feasible due to limited space or terrain constraints. High-tensile steel wire mesh is anchored to the slope using rock bolts to control falling debris and guide material safely downslope.

Rockfall netting provides durable, long-term containment with minimal surface disturbance and is well suited to environmentally sensitive or access-limited locations. GSI designs netting systems to withstand expected impact forces and support efficient inspection and maintenance over time.

Other Rockfall Containment Solutions

In addition to catch fences and netting, GSI provides a range of specialized containment systems, including:

Protective barriers that redirect debris flows away from roads, infrastructure, and other vulnerable areas.

GSI’s Approach to Rockfall Containment

Rockfall containment requires a site-specific approach. GSI begins each project with a detailed assessment of slope conditions, rock characteristics, access limitations, and risk exposure. Engineering analyses are used to evaluate slope geometry, anticipated rockfall energy, and environmental conditions.

Based on this evaluation, GSI develops a containment strategy that prioritizes safety, constructability, and long-term performance while aligning with permitting and operational constraints.

Specialized Limited-Access Installation Equipment

Successful containment relies on proper installation. GSI uses a specialized fleet of purpose-built, limited-access rock drills capable of operating on steep slopes, narrow benches, and remote sites. This equipment allows containment systems to be installed safely and efficiently where conventional machinery cannot operate.

Crews are trained to install systems with precision, supporting long-term durability and minimizing disruption to surrounding infrastructure.

Engineering Expertise and Field Experience

GSI’s teams include experienced engineers and rock remediation technicians trained in rockfall containment and slope hazard management. Field experience across active transportation corridors, utilities, and industrial sites informs constructable designs and efficient installation. This combination of engineering and field execution allows GSI to deliver reliable containment systems tailored to complex Canadian terrain and operating conditions.

Rockfall Containment Solutions for Securing Unstable Rock

In some applications, rockfall risk is managed by securing unstable rock directly to the slope. Methods may include bolting large blocks, installing high-tensile mesh with anchors, applying shotcrete to seal weathered faces, or using chemical resins to bond fractured rock. GSI evaluates these options as part of an integrated containment strategy and installs systems using specialized equipment to ensure safe, long-term performance.

Rockfall Mitigation for Mining Operations in Canada

“The entire crew was a pleasure to work with; very hard working, pleasant and polite to everyone they worked with. Both Andrew and Mike were very professional as your onsite superintendent/GF. They were punctual every day, attended the safety huddle with the surface crew every day and took part in that. Between your crew and our surface crew, they lined up the work so that it went off without a problem.

I was impressed with Mike in regards to the rock slide. … After discussing with your engineers and management a plan was devised to bring down a piece that potentially could have been a hazard. Mike, along with 1-2 others, were down on that very large piece drilling the required holes. On the day of the blast, Mike worked with our team to ensure he had everything he needed for the blast. We had scheduled it for 1:00, he and the others were up in time to blast but he did not feel right about the tie in. … Without hesitation, he and the crew member (young Irish fellow) went back down and corrected the tie in. The blast went off without issues at 1:30. He most likely only had one shot at it, I am happy he took the time to correct….

I inspected today, great job. …. Boden is a great asset to your team as well. He is a pretty sharp guy, very keen, does great work.

I would like to thank all of your crew, I think they all deserve kudos. They are all very hard working professionals who seem to really enjoy their work.”

Successful Project and Teamwork in British Columbia, Canada

The final product for the winter looks very well done and Matthew was great to work with. I look forward to working with your team next Spring and on future projects.

Trusted Mitigation Project Support from GSI Crew

John Boyd was great. I couldn’t be more pleased with the crew. For the next mitigation project, we’ll work with GSI and specifically request John Boyd.
