Ground Anchors for Reliable Lateral Support

Tiebacks

GeoStabilization International designs and installs tieback anchor systems that improve stability for retaining walls, shoring, bridge abutments, and reinforced slopes across Canada. From tight urban excavations in Ontario and British Columbia to transportation and utility corridors in Alberta and Atlantic Canada, GSI delivers engineered lateral support built for demanding ground conditions and critical infrastructure performance.

Tiebacks are used in both temporary and permanent applications to control movement, manage lateral pressures, and support safe construction sequencing where conventional reinforcement or larger structural systems are not practical.

What Are Tiebacks?

Tiebacks are tensioned ground anchors installed at an angle and bonded into competent soil or rock with grout. Once stressed, they transfer lateral loads away from the wall or shoring system, helping reduce deformation and improving overall stability.

GSI tieback systems are engineered based on soil stratigraphy, groundwater conditions, anticipated loading, and allowable movement criteria. In Canadian environments where freeze–thaw cycling, high groundwater, and variable soils are common, properly designed anchors play a key role in long-term stability and risk reduction.

Applications Across Canada

Tiebacks are often used to reinforce temporary shoring systems during deep excavations in dense or restricted areas. When paired with soldier piles, lagging, or sheet pile walls, tiebacks help limit ground movement and improve safety for crews, adjacent structures, and nearby utilities.

Retaining walls and abutment structures can experience increasing lateral pressure from soil, water, or surcharge loading. Tiebacks provide added resistance to these forces and can be integrated into rehabilitation plans to extend wall service life without full replacement.

Tiebacks are used to stabilize abutments, wing walls, approach slopes, and corridor features where erosion, slope movement, or differential pressures threaten performance. GSI designs systems to support stability while maintaining access and minimizing disruption.

In landslide-prone corridors and steep terrain, anchors can be combined with soil nails, shotcrete, mesh, and drainage measures to reinforce unstable slopes. This approach helps reduce movement risk while limiting environmental disturbance in sensitive areas.

Add reliable lateral support with tieback anchors

Benefits of Tieback Anchors

Provides reliable resistance to lateral earth pressures

Supports both temporary shoring and permanent stabilization

Controls deformation to protect adjacent assets and access routes

Installs efficiently with limited-access drilling equipment

Performs under Canada’s variable groundwater and seasonal conditions

Reduces the need for large-scale excavation or reconstruction

Tiebacks are a proven solution when stability, constructability, and controlled movement are essential to long-term performance.

Types of Tieback Systems

Steel Bar Anchors

Single high-strength steel bars installed in drilled holes and bonded with grout. Bar anchors are commonly used where moderate-to-high tensile capacity is required and access or geometry is constrained.

Strand Anchors

Multi-strand systems designed for higher load demands, longer anchor lengths, or deeper stabilization requirements. Strand anchors can be tensioned to provide immediate resistance and improved stiffness for excavation and wall support.

Pre-Loaded Anchors

Active anchors are stressed after installation to engage the structure early and help control movement before deformation occurs. This approach is valuable for sensitive sites where displacement must be limited.
