EARTH RETENTION SOLUTIONS

Engineered Coastal Protection for Long-Term Shoreline Resilience

Seawalls protect critical coastal infrastructure, properties, and public access areas from erosion, wave action, and storm impacts. When these structures begin to deteriorate or lose support, the consequences can be severe, including shoreline retreat, property damage, access loss, and increased safety risk. GeoStabilization International provides engineered seawall stabilization solutions that restore structural integrity, address underlying failure mechanisms, and extend the service life of seawalls across Canada’s dynamic coastal environments.

From the Pacific coast of British Columbia to Atlantic shorelines in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and New Brunswick, GSI delivers stabilization systems designed to perform under constant exposure to saltwater, ice, fluctuating water levels, and extreme weather. Each solution balances strength, durability, and environmental sensitivity, helping owners protect assets while maintaining shoreline stability over the long term.

What Is Seawall Stabilization?

Seawall stabilization involves reinforcing or rehabilitating existing seawalls to prevent movement, cracking, and collapse caused by erosion, groundwater pressure, settlement, and material degradation. Over time, voids can develop behind the wall as backfill is washed out by wave action or groundwater flow. Hydrostatic pressure builds, foundations weaken, and structural capacity is reduced.

GSI’s stabilization approach addresses both the seawall and the retained soils behind it, restoring load capacity and controlling the forces that lead to failure. Each project begins with a detailed geotechnical evaluation of wall materials, drainage conditions, foundation support, and shoreline dynamics. This assessment informs a targeted stabilization strategy that minimizes disruption while meeting engineering and environmental requirements.

Engineered Solutions for Seawall Stability

Rather than relying on one-size-fits-all repairs, GSI designs seawall stabilization systems around the specific performance objectives of each site. These objectives may include restoring structural capacity, controlling groundwater pressure, preventing further erosion, or extending the usable life of the wall without full replacement.

Stabilization solutions may incorporate:

  • Soil nails or reinforcing elements installed behind the seawall to stabilize retained soils and limit movement
  • Anchoring systems, such as tiebacks or rock anchors, to transfer loads into competent subsurface layers
  • Grouting techniques to fill voids, strengthen foundations, and reduce washout behind the wall
  • Geosynthetic materials to reinforce soils, improve drainage, and protect against erosion at the wall base

Each system is engineered to manage hydrostatic pressure, resist ongoing coastal forces, and perform reliably under Canada’s demanding shoreline conditions.

Benefits of Seawall Stabilization

Properly engineered seawall stabilization delivers long-term value for municipalities, property owners, and infrastructure operators, including:

Coastal Protection

Protection of coastal assets from erosion, storm damage, and structural failure

Enhanced Safety

Improved safety for adjacent properties, roadways, and public spaces

Lifespan Extension

Extended service life for existing seawalls, delaying or avoiding full replacement

Cost Efficiency

Reduced lifecycle costs through durable reinforcement and improved drainage

Minimal Disturbance

Minimal environmental disturbance, limiting excavation and sediment displacement

Climate Resilience

Increased resilience against rising water levels and extreme weather events

Why Seawall Stabilization Matters in Canada

Canada’s coastlines experience a wide range of environmental stresses, including tidal extremes, storm surges, ice loading, freeze–thaw cycles, and saltwater corrosion. Many seawalls were constructed decades ago and were not designed for current climate conditions or increased loading demands.

GSI’s seawall stabilization systems are engineered specifically for Canadian coastal realities. Corrosion-resistant materials, advanced soil reinforcement methods, and drainage-focused designs ensure performance under long-term exposure to moisture, temperature variation, and wave action. Where environmental sensitivity is a concern, GSI prioritizes low-impact installation methods that support permitting requirements and preserve natural shoreline processes.

Accountable Delivery Through Design-Build-Warranty

Seawall rehabilitation often involves unknown subsurface conditions and evolving shoreline behavior. GSI delivers stabilization projects through a design-build-warranty model, providing single-point accountability from assessment through installation and long-term performance. This approach reduces coordination risk, manages uncertainty, and gives owners confidence that stabilization systems will perform as intended over time.

Client Reviews

Professional and Responsive Project Support in Canada

Steve [Wahl] has been gracious with his time during our visits. The feedback … has been very positive (almost glowing) and also your quick action to resolve any concerns from our last visit ... was greatly appreciated…. Keep up the great work, you and your team’s professionalism has not gone unnoticed.

Successful Project and Teamwork in British Columbia, Canada

The final product for the winter looks very well done and Matthew was great to work with. I look forward to working with your team next Spring and on future projects.

Safe and Professional Roadway Project in British Columbia, Canada

As told by GSI Project Development Engineer: I just chatted with [the] Operation Manager for the Hwy 3 Char Creek project. He is extremely pleased with the way we are progressing, and very impressed with Matt and the crew’s professionalism and communication. I understand several Ministry reps were on site and given the red-carpet treatment and full briefing. They were pleased with the visit. Also, through all the years of work [he] had never experienced such a positive Workers Compensation Board safety inspection. In a thorough inspection that was nearly 2 hours in length, I understand the only comments the inspector could come up with were:

  • the fire extinguisher on the rental fork lift was missing an inspection tag (fully functional, good shape unit, just missing a tag),
  • the flagger didn’t have a reflective strip over the top of the hard hat (they have reflectors all the way around, but…. not over the top)

Nice work Gentleman!
