Slope Mesh / Netting

Mesh & BioWall® Facings for Slope Stabilization

GeoStabilization International designs and installs advanced slope mesh systems to stabilize steep terrain, control erosion, and support long-term slope performance across Canada. For projects where a natural finish is preferred, the BioWall® offers a patented, environmentally friendly facing option for bare rock or mineral soil slopes that are too steep to revegetate on their own. This “living” mesh system can be planted with native vegetation, using live stakes, sprigs, plugs, bare root, or seed, and can be paired with irrigation to support establishment. BioWall® can also serve as the facing for Geosynthetically Confined Soil® (GCS®) Walls with face batters up to 70 degrees, providing durable stabilization that blends into the surrounding landscape.

Engineered Mesh & BioWall® Facings

GSI’s mesh and BioWall® facings offer environmentally sensitive and visually unobtrusive stabilization options. The BioWall® system is a patented facing designed for slopes too steep to naturally revegetate. It can be planted with native vegetation, including live stakes, sprigs, plugs, or seed, and can include irrigation where long-term establishment is required.

When installed over rock or mineral soil slopes, BioWall® provides a “living” surface that enhances environmental compatibility. It can also be used as a facing for Geosynthetically Confined Soil (GCS®) Walls, allowing steep batters to be stabilized with a natural appearance. These systems are well-suited for Canadian regions where visual integration and low-impact treatments are preferred.

Benefits of Mesh & BioWall® Systems

Suitable for shallow surficial failures

A natural alternative to concrete facings

Reduced visual impact while providing reliable restraint

Lower material and installation costs compared to heavier systems

Minimal disturbance during installation, supporting environmental protection efforts

Why Choose GSI for Slope Stabilization

GSI utilizes advanced stabilization methods that combine slope mesh, ground anchors, soil nails, and BioWall® facings to stop shallow movement with minimal excavation and reduced site disturbance. This approach is especially valuable in steep Canadian terrain or confined transportation corridors, where reduced construction footprint, shorter closure times, and environmental protection are priorities.

GSI’s portfolio includes thousands of completed stabilization projects, and the company consistently integrates best practices for safety, design, and construction across all phases of work.

Stabilize slopes while supporting drainage and vegetation

High-Capacity Slope Mesh Systems

Depending on site geometry, loading, and environmental conditions, GSI specifies a range of high-performance mesh and slope netting systems. These engineered products provide surface stabilization and help control shallow sloughing, erosion, and weathering.

High Performance Netting (HPN and HPN+) is a high-tensile steel mesh used in anchored systems to stabilize shallow failures. Key features include:

  • Minimum isotropic strength of 150 kN/m
  • High-strength galvanized steel wire
  • Configurations that support both passive and tensioned systems
  • Compatibility with launched or drilled nails
  • Open structure that supports drainage and vegetation growth

This type of mesh is commonly used on steep rock and soil slopes with shallow instability.

MacMat® combines a three-dimensional erosion control mat with double-twisted wire mesh reinforcement. Benefits include:

  • Immediate increase in erosion resistance
  • Permanent turf reinforcement
  • Compatibility with soil nails
  • Easy installation on steep or irregular slopes

The polymer matrix retains soil and promotes vegetation growth, making it ideal for environmentally sensitive settings.

The TECCO® system is widely used for stabilizing steep, weathered slopes and is one of the strongest mesh systems available. Key attributes include:

  • High-tensile alloyed steel wire
  • Tight, uniform mesh designed for surface contact
  • Excellent resistance to weather and abrasion
  • Compatibility with vegetation and bio-reclamation techniques

TECCO® mesh is tensioned to the slope surface using nails and plates, creating a secure, long-term stabilization system that allows natural vegetation to develop through and over the mesh.

Integrated Slope Stabilization Systems

GSI’s slope mesh and slope netting designs are tailored to project-specific geology and site constraints, and can be integrated with additional stabilization elements such as:

  • Soil nails for structural reinforcement
  • GCS® Walls for grade separation
  • Anchored mesh for high-capacity performance
  • Surface drainage improvements
  • Erosion protection and revegetation treatments

Environmental Compatibility

Canadian slope environments often include sensitive ecosystems, waterways, and wildlife habitats. Mesh and BioWall® facings help minimize environmental disturbance by allowing slopes to drain naturally, supporting revegetation and wildlife-friendly surfaces, reducing excavation and site disruption, and providing long-lasting stabilization with a natural appearance. These features make mesh systems a strong option for projects requiring environmental stewardship, such as transportation corridors, park infrastructure, or watershed improvements.
