RailJET

Targeted Subgrade Stabilization for Canadian Rail Corridors

RailJET®

GeoStabilization International delivers advanced ground improvement solutions for rail infrastructure across Canada. RailJET® is GSI’s patent-pending jet-grouting–based technology engineered specifically for railway environments where access constraints, limited track windows, and long-term performance are critical.

Designed for freight, passenger, and industrial rail systems, RailJET® strengthens soft or underperforming subgrades with minimal surface disruption. The system is particularly effective in corridors affected by glaciated soils, saturated deposits, seasonal freeze–thaw cycles, and remote access limitations.

What Is RailJET®?

RailJET® is a modified jet-grouting process that stabilizes railroad subgrades by mixing in-situ soil with a cementitious slurry. Using high-pressure horizontal fluid jets, the system forms soil-cement columns beneath the track structure.

Mounted on a Hi-Rail platform, RailJET® can be deployed directly from the track without supplemental rail equipment. This allows crews to operate efficiently within restricted work windows and in locations where traditional excavation would be disruptive or impractical.

The resulting soil-cement columns, typically 8 to 16 inches in diameter depending on subsurface conditions, reinforce the subgrade in both bearing and shear. The process also fills ballast pockets, improving load distribution and track uniformity.

How RailJET® Works

RailJET® improves subgrade performance from within the existing track structure by creating engineered soil-cement reinforcement zones beneath active rail lines.

  • Hi-Rail-mounted deployment allows equipment to mobilize directly on active rail lines, reducing staging requirements and enabling work within limited track windows.
  • High-pressure horizontal jet injection introduces cementitious slurry beneath the rail structure at controlled depths and spacing.
  • In-situ soil-cement column formation occurs as jet energy blends slurry with existing soils, eliminating the need for large-scale excavation.
  • Engineered column design improves stiffness, bearing capacity, and shear resistance based on site-specific loading conditions.
  • Increased track modulus enhances load distribution under repeated axle loads.
  • Ballast void stabilization reduces localized settlement and improves long-term track geometry retention.

Because the system strengthens the subgrade in place, excavation and full track removal are avoided, allowing stabilization to be completed efficiently while minimizing operational disruption.

Applications Across Canadian Rail Networks

RailJET® is suitable for both planned improvement programs and emergency stabilization efforts. It is used to address:

  • Soft or saturated subgrades
  • Superelevation distortion in curved track
  • Bridge approach settlement and dynamic loading concerns
  • Localized sinkholes or sudden loss of support
  • Remote or limited-access corridors

Engineering Benefits

RailJET® provides measurable performance improvements, including:

  • Reduced settlement and lateral spreading
  • Increased bearing capacity and shear resistance
  • Improved track modulus and geometry retention
  • Strengthened bridge transitions
  • High grout utilization with minimal material waste
  • Compatibility with trench drain systems for combined drainage and stabilization

By reinforcing the subgrade in place, RailJET® helps extend infrastructure service life and reduce long-term maintenance demands.

Client Reviews

Successful Project Support in British Columbia, Canada

Hi Graeme, I apologize for taking so long to respond; it is a credit to the smoothness of this project that I was able to shift my focus onto other ones. When asked by a colleague how this project went, I responded "that so last week". Seriously though, I want to sincerely thank you and your crew for their great efforts and patience getting this going and completed safely and successfully. A senior manager reviewing the photos also noted how tidy and well organized the site looked. Thanks also for accommodating all our site visits and heli close-ups.

Geohazard Stabilization for Railway Infrastructure

GSI was very professional and easy to work with throughout the whole process. They communicated well and were accommodating to our production needs, while allowing us to work with them to help them accomplish what they needed to get done as well. Dan, Amanda, Zech, Craig, and Justin were all great. It was actually pretty refreshing to be able to work with a group that was so easy deal with, especially for a contractor coming in from out of town. They all seemed to have Midwestern values and work ethic. If you have any questions whatsoever, I would be more than happy to discuss. Based on our experience, I would confidently and quickly recommend GSI to anyone needing similar geo stabilization.

Trusted Mitigation Project Support from GSI Crew

John Boyd was great. I couldn’t be more pleased with the crew. For the next mitigation project, we’ll work with GSI and specifically request John Boyd.
