Rockfall Barriers

Rockfall Barriers

Protection for Canada’s Steepest Slopes

Rockfall barriers are critical protective systems used to intercept and contain falling rock before it reaches infrastructure, roadways, or occupied areas. GeoStabilization International designs and installs engineered rockfall barrier systems that reduce geohazard risk while accommodating the complex terrain and environmental exposure conditions found across Canada.

From the mountainous highway corridors of British Columbia and Alberta to the coastal cliffs of Atlantic Canada and rock cuts in Ontario and Quebec, GSI delivers barrier systems engineered for site-specific rockfall energy, trajectory, and slope geometry. Our integrated design-build approach combines geotechnical assessment, energy modeling, and specialized installation techniques to provide long-term protection in both remote and high-traffic environments.

What Are Rockfall Barriers?

Rockfall barriers are engineered systems designed to intercept, absorb, and contain falling rocks or debris before they impact critical assets. Installed along the downslope side of rock faces, cuts, and embankments, these systems function as dynamic energy-absorbing structures rather than rigid retaining walls.

Unlike mass concrete or static containment methods, modern rockfall barriers are designed to deform in a controlled manner under impact. This controlled deformation dissipates kinetic energy through mesh elongation, cables, posts, and energy dissipation devices, reducing peak loads transferred to anchors and foundations.

In Canadian climates, barrier systems must be designed to account for freeze–thaw cycling, snow loading, rock weathering patterns, groundwater flow, and corrosion exposure. Proper anchorage design and drainage considerations are essential to maintaining long-term performance.

Rockfall Barrier Systems

GSI designs and installs multiple barrier configurations based on energy demand, terrain constraints, and access conditions. Each system is engineered to meet defined energy capacity ratings based on rockfall analysis, ensuring performance against anticipated block size, velocity, and impact height.

High-energy systems composed of steel wire mesh, support posts, perimeter cables, and energy dissipators. These systems are designed to absorb and redistribute impact forces through controlled deformation and are well suited for steep, irregular terrain.

Rigid or semi-rigid containment systems used where lower energy events are anticipated or where space constraints limit deflection capacity. Frequently installed along highways, rail corridors, and cut slopes.

Integrated configurations that combine flexible and rigid elements to optimize containment and deflection performance for complex slope geometries or variable rockfall patterns.

Flexible high-tensile steel mesh or netting installed directly over rock faces to control and guide falling debris downslope. Unlike energy-rated barriers that intercept impacts, draped systems allow smaller rock fragments to travel in a controlled manner to designated catch areas at the base of the slope. These systems are commonly used along transportation corridors and steep rock cuts where frequent small to medium rockfall events are anticipated.

Protect High-Risk Slopes

Evaluate Rockfall Mitigation Options

Engineering and Performance

Rockfall barrier design begins with site-specific hazard assessment. GSI evaluates:

  • Rock mass characteristics and detachment potential
  • Slope angle, height, and bench geometry
  • Rockfall trajectory and bounce height
  • Estimated impact energy and frequency
  • Foundation and anchor capacity

Energy modeling and trajectory simulation are used to determine barrier height, placement, and energy rating. Anchoring systems, often consisting of rock anchors or soil nails, are designed to safely transfer loads into stable material. Systems are detailed to accommodate drainage and minimize debris accumulation, particularly in regions subject to snowmelt, heavy rainfall, or seasonal freeze–thaw cycles.

Applications of Rockfall Barriers in Canada

Rockfall barriers are widely used to protect infrastructure and communities across diverse Canadian terrain, including:

  • Highways and mountain passes prone to rockfall hazards
  • Rail corridors adjacent to steep rock cuts
  • Hydroelectric facilities, spillways, and dam access roads
  • Mining and quarry operations
  • Industrial sites located below unstable rock faces
  • Coastal infrastructure exposed to erosion and weathered cliffs
  • Residential or commercial developments near natural escarpments

Each installation is engineered to align with project-specific risk tolerance, regulatory requirements, and long-term service objectives.

Benefits of Rockfall Barriers

Enhanced Public Safety

Reduces exposure risk to vehicles, pedestrians, and infrastructure in active rockfall zones.

Engineered Energy Absorption

Designed to withstand defined impact energy levels through controlled deformation.

Durability in Harsh Climates

Corrosion-resistant components and robust anchoring systems support long-term performance.

Adaptable to Complex Terrain

Effective on steep slopes, remote corridors, and limited-access sites.

Reduced Construction Impact

Provides targeted hazard mitigation without extensive excavation or large retaining structures.

Scalable Protection

Systems can be selected and configured to match site-specific hazard levels.

By intercepting and containing falling rock before impact, rockfall barriers provide a proactive risk mitigation solution that supports infrastructure resilience and operational continuity.

Rockfall Mitigation and Scaling for Mining Operations in Canada

Hey Trevor, I gotta [sic] admit, I was a little worried after our progress on the first day of scaling. I wondered if I’d missed something in analyzing that slope! However, on day two, the guys were able to get the bulk of the loose material down in the two areas I was concerned about. They also installed two prisms into the blocks adjacent to the areas scaled so we can monitor any changes in the slope.
The team who came to site were the epitome of professional, not to mention a lot of fun to work with. There was never any point where I felt they were working unsafely. I am most impressed with the entire operation.
I think we were able to remove 100% of the immediate hazard for that area, and 75-80% of the overall hazard. Job well done!

Successful Project Support in British Columbia, Canada

Hi Graeme, I apologize for taking so long to respond; it is a credit to the smoothness of this project that I was able to shift my focus onto other ones. When asked by a colleague how this project went, I responded "that so last week". Seriously though, I want to sincerely thank you and your crew for their great efforts and patience getting this going and completed safely and successfully. A senior manager reviewing the photos also noted how tidy and well organized the site looked. Thanks also for accommodating all our site visits and heli close-ups.

Emergency Rockfall Mitigation for Mining Operations

I recently interacted with some of your rockfall division guys. I have never seen an outfit as competent on safety measures nor any contractors who worked as hard as your guys do. During the work, I was in a room with your guys and some other contractors, and your guys were head and shoulders above the rest in all aspects.
