Chemical Grouting

Advanced Soil Stabilization and Groundwater Control

Chemical Grouting

GeoStabilization International provides engineered chemical grouting solutions that strengthen soils, reduce settlement risk, and control groundwater movement. This precision ground improvement method improves weak or permeable ground, seals seepage paths, and creates durable subsurface barriers with minimal surface disruption.

Backed by in-house geotechnical expertise and field-proven installation methods, GSI designs chemical grouting programs that support safe construction, protect infrastructure, and improve long-term performance for projects across Canada’s diverse soil and climate conditions.

What Is Chemical Grouting?

Chemical grouting is a ground improvement process that injects low-viscosity chemical solutions into soil, rock, or concrete under controlled pressure. Once placed, the material reacts and solidifies, forming a strengthened, stabilized mass, and in many cases, a water-resistant barrier.

Chemical grouting is commonly used to bind granular soils, improve load-bearing performance, and reduce permeability. It can also seal fractures and voids in rock or concrete, supporting both stabilization and waterproofing objectives. When installed in designed patterns, chemical grouting can form a subsurface curtain that limits groundwater flow and helps prevent erosion, piping, or loss of support beneath critical assets.

These characteristics make chemical grouting well suited for Canadian conditions where groundwater movement, variable soils, and seasonal freeze–thaw cycles can accelerate instability.

Applications of Chemical Grouting

GSI applies chemical grouting across a wide range of infrastructure, construction, and remediation needs, including:

  • Soil stabilization: Increases stiffness and strength in sands, gravels, and silts

  • Groundwater control: Reduces seepage and limits erosion pathways below grade

  • Void filling: Treats cavities and washouts beneath slabs, footings, and pavements

  • Concrete and rock sealing: Fills joints and fractures in tunnels, foundations, and retaining structures

  • Settlement mitigation: Improves ground conditions to reduce differential movement and long-term risk

Chemical grouting is especially valuable when excavation is restricted, access is limited, or maintaining surface operations is a priority.

Benefits of Chemical Grouting

Compared to excavation or soil replacement, chemical grouting provides a targeted, low-disruption approach to improving ground performance:

  • Improves load-bearing capacity by bonding soil particles and reducing compressibility

  • Controls water movement by sealing flow paths and reducing permeability

  • Minimizes surface disturbance using small injection points and limited excavation

  • Provides targeted treatment focused on the problem area for efficient material use

  • Adapts to varying conditions through adjustable grout formulations and reaction times

These advantages make chemical grouting a practical solution for stabilizing soils and managing groundwater in complex environments.

How Chemical Grouting Works

Each chemical grouting project starts with a site-specific assessment of soil type, groundwater behavior, and performance requirements. Injection ports are installed in a designed pattern, and a selected chemical grout, often silicate- or resin-based, is injected under controlled pressure.

The grout permeates pores and fractures, then reacts and cures to form a stabilized mass. GSI adjusts grout viscosity, set time, injection spacing, and pressure based on field response and subsurface conditions. Once cured, the treated ground provides improved bearing performance, reduced permeability, and more predictable long-term stability.

This process is often used beneath foundations, embankments, tunnels, and water-affected structures where settlement or seepage creates safety and performance concerns.

Suitable Ground Conditions

Chemical grouting performs best in granular soils such as sands, gravels, and coarse silts where the grout can flow and permeate effectively. It is also highly effective for sealing fractured rock and controlling seepage through concrete joints and cracks.

In mixed or lower-permeability soils, GSI engineers refine injection parameters and grout selection to achieve reliable results. Each design is based on geotechnical data and field conditions to ensure performance targets and project requirements are met.

Positive Experience Working with Project Team

Justin, I wanted to reach out and let you know that is was a pleasure working with you all at the [….] Project. The guys on this job were very professional and never once wavered from the plans and specs. These guys did absolutely everything the right way and wanted to make sure that the customer was happy with the work. Again, I appreciate your guys’ hard work and professionalism and look forward to working with you again in the future.

Foundation Grouting and Structural Repair for Homeowner

I wanted to drop you a quick note. Late last year I had Tom Szynakiewicz come by and advise me as to what I needed to do to fix my house structure. Tom and GSI were great to work with to find a solution for my structure issues. GSI did an excellent job for us and got us on the right track with the work that was performed. We just sold the home last week, and disclosed the work that was done. We had zero issues with selling the home because it was fixed by GSI. I am very thankful I called and got you guys involved! Thanks again for steering me in the right direction Wayne!
