Sinkhole Repair

GROUND IMPROVEMENT SOLUTIONS

Sinkhole Repair

GeoStabilization International provides engineered sinkhole repair and ground stabilization services that restore support, reduce settlement risk, and protect people and infrastructure across Canada. GSI’s teams identify subsurface voiding, define the mechanisms driving instability, and implement repair strategies designed for long-term performance, not temporary patchwork.

From karst-influenced ground in eastern Ontario and Québec to settlement-prone urban corridors in Alberta and British Columbia, GSI delivers durable sinkhole remediation programs that restore structural reliability and reduce future risk.

What Causes Sinkholes?

Sinkholes occur when the ground loses support beneath the surface, creating voids that can collapse without warning. Some sinkholes are naturally driven, especially in areas with soluble bedrock such as limestone or gypsum, but many failures are triggered or accelerated by water movement and human activity.

Common sinkhole causes include:

Bedrock dissolution and erosion due to groundwater flow

Leaking or broken utilities that wash out supporting soils

Poorly compacted backfill after construction or trenching

Changes in groundwater levels from pumping, dewatering, or prolonged drought

Subsurface voids associated with old infrastructure, storm systems, or legacy workings

GSI begins with geotechnical investigation and field evaluation to determine the extent of voiding and select a repair method that addresses the underlying failure mechanism.

Sinkhole Repair and Remediation Methods

No two sinkholes behave the same. GSI designs repairs based on soil type, void geometry, groundwater conditions, and the structure or asset at risk. Solutions may include:

Low-mobility grout is injected under controlled pressure to fill voids and densify surrounding soils. This approach is effective beneath roadways, slabs, and foundations where excavation is limited.

Microfine cement or chemical grout penetrates smaller void spaces and fissures to improve ground stiffness and reduce seepage pathways, often used where groundwater flow contributes to instability.

Where foundations are compromised, micropiles transfer loads through the affected zone into competent strata or bedrock, restoring long-term structural support with minimal surface disruption.

For open or accessible sinkholes, GSI may excavate to competent ground and rebuild the area using engineered fill, rock, and grout to restore uniform support and reduce recurrence risk.

Sinkhole Repair Beneath Structures

Sinkholes beneath buildings, homes, pavements, and critical facilities require precision and minimal disturbance. GSI commonly combines grouting and deep foundation reinforcement to restore uniform support beneath the structure.

Typical repair steps may include:

Grouting to fill voids and improve soil density

Installing micropiles to bypass unstable zones and restore load paths

Stabilizing the foundation footprint where settlement has occurred

This approach provides a long-term solution that reduces future movement and supports structural safety.

Utility and Infrastructure Sinkhole Repair

Sinkhole-related settlement often develops along water mains, sewer lines, storm systems, and other buried infrastructure. Soil can erode into failing joints or void spaces, creating depressions that expand over time.

GSI stabilizes these areas using targeted void filling, controlled grouting, and limited-access equipment that supports repairs in high-traffic corridors while minimizing disruption to essential services.

Positive Experience Working with Project Team

Justin, I wanted to reach out and let you know that is was a pleasure working with you all at the [….] Project. The guys on this job were very professional and never once wavered from the plans and specs. These guys did absolutely everything the right way and wanted to make sure that the customer was happy with the work. Again, I appreciate your guys’ hard work and professionalism and look forward to working with you again in the future.

Safe and Professional Roadway Project in British Columbia, Canada

As told by GSI Project Development Engineer: I just chatted with [the] Operation Manager for the Hwy 3 Char Creek project. He is extremely pleased with the way we are progressing, and very impressed with Matt and the crew’s professionalism and communication. I understand several Ministry reps were on site and given the red-carpet treatment and full briefing. They were pleased with the visit. Also, through all the years of work [he] had never experienced such a positive Workers Compensation Board safety inspection. In a thorough inspection that was nearly 2 hours in length, I understand the only comments the inspector could come up with were:

  • the fire extinguisher on the rental fork lift was missing an inspection tag (fully functional, good shape unit, just missing a tag),
  • the flagger didn’t have a reflective strip over the top of the hard hat (they have reflectors all the way around, but…. not over the top)

Nice work Gentleman!

Emergency Safety Response for Mining Operations

On our weekly project update call at the mine, our meetings begin with a ‘safety share’. It’s usually filled with personal observations, mine traffic pattern changes to be conscientious of, or in this week’s meeting, a good catch by GSI’s Courtney Smith. There is a protocol to alert mine personnel working in the pit of any hazardous conditions, which includes highwall instabilities or severe weather approaching. Early hazard detection is critical at the mine as it is over 2.5 miles wide by almost a 1 mile deep. If warranted, the crews will need ample time to evacuate. With all the systems, risk controls and procedures in place to protect over 300 people working there, an onsite contractor (GSI) picked up on the lightning / weather quickly approaching and evacuated the slope. He then proceeded to advise mine dispatch of the situation, who in turn advised relevant mine crews (such as the drill & blast crew) that need to evacuate in the event of lightning. Courtney and crew should be commended on their proactive effort to let mine personnel know and not assume someone else was watching. The mine recognized this action and we should also take note of this courageous leadership to advise a mine with so many intimidating procedures in place to take action.
