EARTH RETENTION SOLUTIONS

Engineered Excavation Support for Safe, Efficient Construction

Temporary shoring plays a critical role in protecting workers, adjacent structures, and underground utilities during excavation and construction activities. When soil is unsupported, even short-term excavation can lead to collapse, ground movement, or damage to surrounding assets. GeoStabilization International (GSI) delivers engineered temporary shoring solutions that control these risks, maintain site stability, and support safe, compliant construction across Canada.

GSI’s temporary shoring systems are designed for short-term loading and construction sequencing, providing reliable earth retention until permanent structures or backfill are in place. From dense urban environments in Ontario to transportation corridors in Alberta and coastal infrastructure projects in British Columbia, GSI supports contractors and owners with stabilization systems that prioritize safety, efficiency, and constructability.

What is Temporary Shoring?

Temporary shoring refers to short-duration earth retention systems installed to support excavations, slopes, or foundations during construction. These systems are designed to prevent soil collapse, protect nearby buildings and utilities, and provide a safe working environment for crews until permanent support systems are completed.

Unlike permanent shoring, temporary systems are removed or decommissioned once construction activities are finished. They must perform immediately, adapt to changing site conditions, and comply with provincial occupational health and safety requirements throughout the construction phase.

GSI’s engineers evaluate soil conditions, groundwater presence, excavation geometry, and site constraints to design temporary shoring systems that provide the appropriate level of support without unnecessary complexity or disruption.

Engineered Temporary Shoring Solutions

GSI designs temporary shoring systems around project outcomes, not just methods. These outcomes typically include worker safety, protection of adjacent assets, schedule certainty, and regulatory compliance.

Temporary shoring solutions may include:

  • Soil nail systems that stabilize excavation faces and slopes with minimal disturbance
  • Anchoring systems that provide lateral support where deeper retention is required
  • Hybrid shoring approaches that combine temporary support with elements of permanent stabilization
  • Integrated drainage solutions that manage groundwater and reduce hydrostatic pressure during excavation

Each system is engineered to provide immediate support, accommodate inspection and monitoring, and perform reliably for the duration of construction.

West Jefferson Historic Theatre Temporary Shoring

Designed for Urban and Constrained Sites

Temporary shoring is often required in locations where space is limited and adjacent structures cannot tolerate movement. In dense urban areas, excavation support must be installed quickly and with minimal impact to traffic, utilities, and surrounding properties.

GSI specializes in temporary shoring for confined sites, using compact equipment and limited-access installation methods that reduce site footprint and disruption. In many cases, stabilization can be completed with minimal lane closures or without large drilling rigs, allowing work to proceed safely in active environments such as city streets, utility corridors, and commercial developments.

Efficiency Without Compromising Safety

GSI’s temporary shoring systems are engineered to deliver immediate structural capacity, allowing excavation and construction activities to proceed without delay. Installation methods are selected to minimize curing time, reduce equipment mobilization, and streamline sequencing, helping projects stay on schedule while maintaining strict safety standards.

By reducing excavation volume, limiting ground disturbance, and simplifying installation, GSI’s approach often results in lower overall project costs compared to conventional shoring methods. These efficiencies are achieved without compromising engineering rigor or regulatory compliance.

Protection of Adjacent Structures and Utilities

Temporary shoring is frequently required where excavations occur near existing buildings, pavements, or buried services. Even small amounts of ground movement can lead to cracking, settlement, or service interruptions.

GSI’s engineered shoring systems are designed to control movement and protect adjacent assets throughout construction. This focus on asset protection helps reduce liability, prevent unplanned repairs, and maintain public and operational safety during excavation activities.

Accountable Delivery Through Design-Build-Warranty

Temporary shoring involves variable ground conditions and evolving site constraints. GSI delivers temporary shoring projects through a design-build-warranty approach, providing single-point accountability from engineering through installation. Close collaboration between engineers and field crews allows systems to be adapted quickly as conditions change, ensuring continued performance and safety throughout construction.

Professional and Responsive Project Support in Canada

Steve [Wahl] has been gracious with his time during our visits. The feedback … has been very positive (almost glowing) and also your quick action to resolve any concerns from our last visit ... was greatly appreciated…. Keep up the great work, you and your team’s professionalism has not gone unnoticed.

Successful Project and Teamwork in British Columbia, Canada

The final product for the winter looks very well done and Matthew was great to work with. I look forward to working with your team next Spring and on future projects.

Safe and Professional Roadway Project in British Columbia, Canada

As told by GSI Project Development Engineer: I just chatted with [the] Operation Manager for the Hwy 3 Char Creek project. He is extremely pleased with the way we are progressing, and very impressed with Matt and the crew’s professionalism and communication. I understand several Ministry reps were on site and given the red-carpet treatment and full briefing. They were pleased with the visit. Also, through all the years of work [he] had never experienced such a positive Workers Compensation Board safety inspection. In a thorough inspection that was nearly 2 hours in length, I understand the only comments the inspector could come up with were:

  • the fire extinguisher on the rental fork lift was missing an inspection tag (fully functional, good shape unit, just missing a tag),
  • the flagger didn’t have a reflective strip over the top of the hard hat (they have reflectors all the way around, but…. not over the top)

Nice work Gentleman!

Keep Your Project Safe

Let’s Review Your Excavation Conditions

If your project requires short-term excavation support or earth retention, GSI can help evaluate site conditions and develop a temporary shoring strategy aligned with safety, compliance, and construction efficiency.
