EARTH RETENTION SOLUTIONS

Engineered Safety and Stability for Canadian Construction Sites

Excavation shoring is essential for protecting workers, adjacent structures, and surrounding infrastructure during below-grade construction. GeoStabilization International delivers engineered excavation shoring solutions that reduce collapse risk, control ground movement, and support safe, compliant excavation across Canada’s diverse construction environments.

Unprotected or inadequately supported excavations can result in soil failure, worker injury, damage to nearby buildings or utilities, and costly project delays. These risks are heightened in Canada, where variable soils, groundwater, freeze–thaw cycles, and confined urban sites demand carefully engineered support systems. GSI partners with contractors, engineers, and project owners to manage these challenges through site-specific shoring designs that prioritize safety, constructability, and regulatory compliance.

What is Excavation Shoring?

Excavation shoring involves the temporary or permanent support of trench and excavation walls to prevent soil collapse and ground movement during construction activities. Properly engineered shoring systems protect personnel working below grade while maintaining stability around adjacent structures, pavements, and underground utilities.

GSI designs excavation shoring systems using detailed geotechnical assessments that consider soil strength, stratigraphy, groundwater conditions, frost depth, excavation geometry, and construction sequencing. This engineering-driven approach ensures that each system provides the appropriate level of support for the site while meeting or exceeding applicable provincial and federal occupational health and safety requirements.

Shoring solutions may remain in place only for the duration of construction or, in some cases, transition into permanent earth retention or foundation support as part of the completed structure.

Engineered Shoring Solutions for Project-Specific Conditions

No two excavations present the same risks. GSI selects and designs shoring systems based on how the excavation will be used, the duration of support required, and site-specific constraints such as access, nearby assets, and groundwater conditions.

Engineered excavation shoring solutions may include:

  • Rapid support systems for short-term or linear excavations where flexibility and speed are critical
  • Deep excavation support for sites adjacent to existing buildings, utilities, or transportation corridors
  • High-capacity shoring systems for challenging soil profiles or high groundwater pressures
  • Trench protection systems designed to enhance worker safety during utility and pipeline installation
  • Hybrid shoring solutions that combine temporary excavation support with permanent earth retention or foundation elements

Each system is designed to control soil movement, limit settlement, and provide predictable performance throughout construction.

Benefits of Engineered Excavation Shoring

Properly designed excavation shoring delivers measurable safety and project-performance benefits, including:

Worker Safety

Enhanced worker safety by preventing trench and excavation wall collapse

Structure Protection

Protection of adjacent structures and utilities from settlement, vibration, or ground movement

Regulatory Compliance

Regulatory compliance with national and provincial excavation safety standards

Project Efficiency

Improved construction efficiency through reduced delays, stoppages, and unplanned remediation

Risk Reduction

Lower overall project risk by minimizing rework, repairs, and incident-related downtime

Stabilize & Protect

Integrating engineered shoring early in project planning allows teams to proactively manage risk rather than reacting to unstable conditions as they develop.

Applications Across Canadian Construction Environments

GSI’s excavation shoring systems support a wide range of construction and infrastructure projects across Canada. These systems are successfully deployed in dense urban settings, high-traffic corridors, industrial facilities, and remote or access-constrained environments.

Foundation and basement construction for residential, commercial, and institutional buildings

Underground utility installation and rehabilitation

Transportation infrastructure such as tunnels, bridge abutments, and underpasses

Retaining wall construction and replacement

Temporary earth retention during slope repair or infrastructure rehabilitation

Excavation Shoring and Micropiles

Designed for Canadian Conditions and Regulatory Requirements

Construction sites across Canada face unique challenges, including seasonal frost, freeze–thaw cycles, fluctuating groundwater, and limited work windows. In major urban centres such as Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary, excavations often occur within tight footprints and in close proximity to existing infrastructure. In rural and northern regions, variable soil strength and high water tables add additional complexity.

GSI designs excavation shoring systems to account for these realities, combining local geotechnical insight with practical construction experience. Systems are engineered to perform reliably throughout seasonal changes while supporting safe, efficient construction practices that align with provincial occupational health and safety enforcement.

Excavation Shoring

Accountable Delivery Through Design-Build-Warranty

Excavation support involves inherent uncertainty below ground. GSI delivers shoring systems through a design-build-warranty model, providing single-point accountability from initial assessment through installation and performance. This approach reduces coordination risk, simplifies project delivery, and gives contractors and owners confidence that excavation support systems will perform as intended throughout construction.

Client Reviews

Professional and Responsive Project Support in Canada

Steve [Wahl] has been gracious with his time during our visits. The feedback … has been very positive (almost glowing) and also your quick action to resolve any concerns from our last visit ... was greatly appreciated…. Keep up the great work, you and your team’s professionalism has not gone unnoticed.

Successful Project and Teamwork in British Columbia, Canada

The final product for the winter looks very well done and Matthew was great to work with. I look forward to working with your team next Spring and on future projects.

Safe and Professional Roadway Project in British Columbia, Canada

As told by GSI Project Development Engineer: I just chatted with [the] Operation Manager for the Hwy 3 Char Creek project. He is extremely pleased with the way we are progressing, and very impressed with Matt and the crew’s professionalism and communication. I understand several Ministry reps were on site and given the red-carpet treatment and full briefing. They were pleased with the visit. Also, through all the years of work [he] had never experienced such a positive Workers Compensation Board safety inspection. In a thorough inspection that was nearly 2 hours in length, I understand the only comments the inspector could come up with were:

  • the fire extinguisher on the rental fork lift was missing an inspection tag (fully functional, good shape unit, just missing a tag),
  • the flagger didn’t have a reflective strip over the top of the hard hat (they have reflectors all the way around, but…. not over the top)

Nice work Gentleman!
