What is rockfall netting?

Rockfall netting is a flexible protection system used to intercept, contain, and control falling rocks or debris from unstable slopes. Constructed from high-tensile wire mesh or steel netting, these systems act as passive barriers, absorbing energy and preventing rock fragments from reaching roadways, railways, or structures below.

The netting can be installed in two main configurations:

  • Draped Netting: Installed along the slope face, allowing debris to move downward in a controlled manner while preventing material from reaching vulnerable areas.
  • Anchored or Fixed Netting: Secured to the slope using rock bolts or anchors, providing active stabilization by reinforcing and containing the surface material.

GSI’s engineered rockfall netting systems are designed to perform in Canada’s challenging climatic and geological environments, providing long-lasting protection with minimal maintenance.

Benefits of Rockfall Netting

Rockfall netting provides immediate and reliable protection against falling debris, dramatically reducing risks to people, vehicles, and infrastructure.

When combined with anchors or soil nails, netting systems reinforce surface materials and stabilize slopes, preventing shallow failures and erosion.

GSI’s netting solutions are designed to blend naturally into their surroundings. The open structure allows water drainage and vegetation regrowth, promoting long-term slope health while maintaining aesthetic harmony with the landscape

Rockfall netting can be installed as a standalone measure or combined with other systems such as pinned mesh, rock bolts, or draped mesh for comprehensive slope protection.

Made from corrosion-resistant steel, our netting systems are engineered to withstand freeze-thaw cycles, heavy precipitation, and repeated impact loads—common challenges in Canada’s climates.

Compared to large retaining walls or major regrading, rockfall netting offers a cost-effective alternative that minimizes construction time and material use. Its durability reduces the need for ongoing repairs, providing significant lifecycle savings.
