Ensuring Stability and Structural Integrity

Void Filling

GeoStabilization International provides engineered void filling solutions that restore ground support, reduce collapse risk, and improve long-term performance for infrastructure and structures across Canada. Whether voids develop beneath roadways in Ontario, along utility corridors in Alberta, or near water-adjacent assets in British Columbia, GSI delivers targeted stabilization designed to protect public safety and restore reliable load transfer.

Using precision placement methods and site-appropriate materials, GSI fills subsurface cavities, strengthens surrounding soils, and helps prevent recurring settlement or sudden surface failure. The result is improved stability, reduced risk to assets, and confidence that the ground below is performing as intended.

Void Filling

What Is Void Filling?

Void filling is a ground improvement method used to stabilize subsurface conditions by filling underground cavities or loss-of-support zones caused by erosion, internal washout, settlement of poorly compacted fill, or legacy conditions such as abandoned workings and buried infrastructure.

Because voids can expand without obvious warning, early identification and engineered treatment are critical. GSI evaluates the subsurface conditions, the cause of voiding, and any groundwater influence, then designs a placement program that restores support while limiting surface disruption.

Across Canada’s varied geology, from carbonate-influenced terrain in parts of Ontario to coastal soils and complex infrastructure networks, void filling provides a practical way to regain stability without full excavation.

Common Void Filling Materials

A versatile blend of cement, sand, and water, grout can be formulated for a wide range of conditions, from highly fluid chemical grouts that penetrate fine fissures to dense cement-based mixes for larger voids. It offers high compressive strength and durability, ensuring restored ground stability.

Polyurethane foam expands rapidly to fill irregular cavities and restore support with minimal disturbance. It is often used where speed matters, access is limited, or work must be completed quickly to protect traffic flow and safety.

Compaction grouting uses a stiff, low-mobility grout injected under pressure to fill voids while densifying surrounding soils. This approach is effective where weak ground needs improvement beyond the void itself.

Flowable fill (CLSM) is a highly workable material used for larger cavities and complex geometries, including areas affected by erosion, washouts, or legacy subsurface features. It provides uniform support while reducing the need for intensive excavation.

Restore stability where ground support has been lost

Applications of Void Filling

Sinkhole Remediation

Void filling can restore support beneath pavement, shoulders, and developed areas where subsurface collapse threatens public safety. Systems are selected to stabilize quickly and reduce the chance of further ground loss.

Mine Subsidence Repair

Subsurface voids related to historic workings, degraded materials, or hidden cavities can create long-term settlement risk. Void filling can stabilize affected zones and support safe use of the area above.

Tunnel and Underground Structure Repair

Voids behind retaining structures, around culverts, and adjacent to buried systems can lead to settlement, water pathways, and structural distress. Injection methods restore support, improve ground contact, and reduce ongoing deterioration.

Foundation Stabilization

When voids form beneath slabs or foundations, structures can experience cracking, misalignment, and service disruption. Void filling helps restore uniform bearing support and reduce differential movement risk.

Embankment and Flood-Control Risk Reduction

In water-adjacent environments, internal erosion and voiding can compromise embankments and protective systems. Filling loss zones supports stability and helps reduce seepage-related deterioration.

Benefits of Void Filling

  • Restores ground support and load-bearing performance
  • Reduces collapse risk and unexpected surface failure
  • Limits settlement and differential movement
  • Extends infrastructure service life and reduces recurring repairs
  • Minimizes excavation and surface disruption
  • Applicable in both urban and remote environments

Whether responding to an active failure or addressing early warning signs, void filling provides an efficient stabilization approach that supports safe, defensible outcomes.

Client Reviews

Positive Experience Working with Project Team

Justin, I wanted to reach out and let you know that is was a pleasure working with you all at the [….] Project. The guys on this job were very professional and never once wavered from the plans and specs. These guys did absolutely everything the right way and wanted to make sure that the customer was happy with the work. Again, I appreciate your guys’ hard work and professionalism and look forward to working with you again in the future.

Foundation Grouting and Structural Repair for Homeowner

I wanted to drop you a quick note. Late last year I had Tom Szynakiewicz come by and advise me as to what I needed to do to fix my house structure. Tom and GSI were great to work with to find a solution for my structure issues. GSI did an excellent job for us and got us on the right track with the work that was performed. We just sold the home last week, and disclosed the work that was done. We had zero issues with selling the home because it was fixed by GSI. I am very thankful I called and got you guys involved! Thanks again for steering me in the right direction Wayne!

Safe and Professional Roadway Project in British Columbia, Canada

As told by GSI Project Development Engineer: I just chatted with [the] Operation Manager for the Hwy 3 Char Creek project. He is extremely pleased with the way we are progressing, and very impressed with Matt and the crew’s professionalism and communication. I understand several Ministry reps were on site and given the red-carpet treatment and full briefing. They were pleased with the visit. Also, through all the years of work [he] had never experienced such a positive Workers Compensation Board safety inspection. In a thorough inspection that was nearly 2 hours in length, I understand the only comments the inspector could come up with were:

  • the fire extinguisher on the rental fork lift was missing an inspection tag (fully functional, good shape unit, just missing a tag),
  • the flagger didn’t have a reflective strip over the top of the hard hat (they have reflectors all the way around, but…. not over the top)

Nice work Gentleman!
