Responsibilities

  • Foster a culture of safety throughout the organization by promoting awareness, accountability,
    and continuous improvement in safety performance.
  • Encourage employee involvement in safety initiatives and recognize achievements in safety excellence. 
  • Ensure adherence to all DOT regulations and standards pertaining to safety in transportation operations, including but not limited to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain safety programs and policies specific to transportation activities, including driver safety, vehicle maintenance, hazardous materials handling, and workplace safety. 
  • Conduct risk assessments of transportation operations, identify potential hazards, and develop strategies to mitigate risks and prevent accidents or incidents. 
  • Provide training to employees and contractors on DOT regulations, safety procedures, and best practices for safe transportation operations. -
  • Ensure that all personnel involved in frontline activities are adequately trained and certified as required. 
  • Lead investigations into transportation-related accidents, incidents, and near-misses. - Analyze root causes and develop recommendations for corrective actions to prevent recurrence. 
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of incidents to regulatory agencies as required. 
  • Conduct regular audits and inspections of facilities, equipment, transportation and operations to ensure compliance with OSHA and DOT regulations and safety standards. 
  • Develop audit protocols, track findings, and implement corrective actions, as necessary. 
  • Maintain accurate records of safety activities, including training records, inspection reports, incident investigations, and compliance documentation. Ensure that all records are organized,
    up-to-date, and easily accessible for internal review and regulatory audits.

Qualifications:

  •  Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Transportation
    Management, or a related field.
  • Advanced degree or professional certifications (e.g., Certified Safety Professional, Certified Transportation Safety Professional) preferred. 
  • Extensive experience (typically 5+ years) in safety management roles with a focus on transportation operations, preferably in regulated industries such as trucking, rail. 
  • In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations, including FMCSA and FRA requirements, and proven experience in implementing compliance programs. - Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess risks, analyze data, and develop effective safety strategies and solutions. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels of the organization, regulatory agencies, and external stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including experience leading cross-functional teams, managing projects, and driving change initiatives. 
  • Proficiency in safety management systems, incident investigation techniques, and regulatory reporting requirements. 
  • High level of attention to detail, organization, and follow-through in managing safety programs and documentation. 
  • Commitment to promoting a culture of safety and continuous improvement within the organization. Working Conditions 
  • The Senior Safety Manager typically works in an office environment but may also spend time in the field conducting inspections and training sessions. 
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, or holidays in response to emergencies or special projects. 
  • May be exposed to hazardous conditions or chemicals while conducting site inspections. 
US pay range for this role.
$102,000$136,000 USD
