Job Summary
The Union Superintendent leads a union crew installing guardrail, attenuators, sign structures, and related highway safety hardware on projects throughout the Road Guard East service area. Based out of the Folsom, NJ yard, this is a hands-on, working leader role responsible for daily crew supervision, safe execution, quality, and production on assigned jobs, while coordinating with the General Superintendent, Project Manager, clients, and union representatives.
Essential Responsibilities
- Lead, supervise, and work alongside a union crew to install guardrail, attenuators, sign structures, and related highway safety hardware in accordance with plans, specs, and DOT requirements.
- Plan and direct daily work, set production goals, and assign tasks to ensure jobs are completed safely, on time, and within budget.
- Enforce all safety requirements; conduct daily toolbox talks, JHAs, and site safety inspections.
- Read and interpret construction plans, shop drawings, and traffic control plans, and ensure field work matches contract documents.
- Coordinate site setup, traffic control, material staging, and equipment use; verify proper operation and maintenance of crew equipment.
- Administer work in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement; coordinate manpower with the local hall and address union and crew issues professionally.
- Mentor, train, and develop crew members; provide clear direction and constructive feedback.
- Serve as the on-site point of contact
- Complete and submit accurate daily reports, timesheets, production logs, and equipment/material records.
- Identify and communicate scope changes, differing site conditions, or extra work to the Project Manager.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Familiarity with DOT specifications, work-zone traffic control, and OSHA construction safety standards.
- Experience working under a union collective bargaining agreement preferred.
- Proficient operating and overseeing common roadway construction equipment (post drivers, skid steers, man lifts, drill rigs/augers, boom trucks, dump trucks).
- Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills; able to lead from the front and work hands-on as needed.
- Comfortable using smartphones/tablets for timekeeping, daily reports, and basic project communication.
Experience
- Minimum 3-5 years of highway, roadway, or heavy/civil construction experience, with at least 2 years in a foreman or lead role.
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred.
Preferred Certifications
- OSHA 10 or 30 – Construction
- ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) or equivalent
- Flagger certification
- First Aid / CPR certification
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Must regularly stand, walk, bend, twist, climb, and use hands to operate tools and equipment; must be able to lift at least 75 pounds.
- Work is performed outdoors and adjacent to live traffic in all weather conditions
- Regional position based at the Folsom, NJ yard, with daily travel to active projects in the Road Guard East service area; night work and occasional overnight travel as project locations require.
