Position Overview

Reporting to the Divisional Senior Safety Manager, the Safety Technician plays a critical role in supporting field operations by providing hands-on safety leadership, technical guidance, and proactive risk management across the assigned region. This position works directly with field crews, supervisors, and operations leadership to ensure that work is executed safely, efficiently, and in full alignment with company safety standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.

In addition to providing day-to-day field support, the Safety Technician assists with incident prevention initiatives, participates in investigations when required, and contributes to the development and implementation of safety programs that strengthen operational performance.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to: 

• Maintain a consistent and visible presence in the field 50-70% to actively support crews, reinforce safe work practices, and build strong working relationships that promote trust, open communication, and a proactive safety culture.
• Provide practical safety guidance to field personnel by assisting with hazard identification, risk assessments, and the development of effective control measures that align with operational requirements and regulatory standards.
• Adopt a challenge-embracing mindset by proactively addressing all company safety-related issues and delivering cost-effective, sustainable solutions that align with organizational values.
• Conduct regular site inspections, field observations, and safety audits to ensure compliance with company procedures, applicable legislation, and industry best practices while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
• Support and coach superintendents and frontline crew members in the application of safe work procedures, safe job planning, and hazard mitigation strategies to strengthen operational ownership of safety.
• Facilitate and participate in safety meetings, WIN Plan meetings, and field-level safety discussions to promote engagement, reinforce expectations, and encourage active participation in safety initiatives.
• Lead investigation of incidents, near misses (Good Catches), and hazards by gathering information, identifying root causes, and supporting the development and implementation of corrective, preventive actions and capturing cost of each event.
• Promote and reinforce positive safety behaviors by recognizing strong safety performance, addressing unsafe conditions constructively, and encouraging accountability at all levels of field operations.
• Support the development and continuous improvement of safety programs, procedures, and field-based safety initiatives that enhance operational safety performance across the assigned region.
• Monitor and support compliance with regulatory requirements, company policies, and industry standards while ensuring documentation and reporting requirements are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
• Collaborate with operations leadership, project teams, and other safety professionals to ensure safety considerations are effectively integrated into planning, scheduling, and execution of work activities.
• Assist in identifying training needs within field crews and support the coordination or delivery of safety-related training to improve competency, awareness, and safe work practices.
• Contribute to the collection and analysis of safety performance data, field observations, and leading indicators to help identify trends and support strategic safety improvements.
• Demonstrate professional growth by taking initiative in problem-solving, managing complex field situations, and progressively assuming greater responsibility in safety leadership activities.
• Support senior safety leadership in the implementation of strategic safety initiatives.
• Required to complete applicable safety audits and all associated internal and external documentation during site visits. These activities are a fundamental component of verifying compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and client expectations. Safety audits and documentation must be conducted thoroughly, accurately, and in a timely manner while on site, ensuring that any identified hazards, observations, or corrective actions are properly recorded and communicated.
• Maintain a commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and industry best practices to strengthen both individual capability and the overall effectiveness of the safety program.
• Safely operate company vehicles in full compliance with Soil Nail Holdings’ fleet policies and procedures, ensuring vehicles are properly maintained, clean, and organized at all times. Drivers must meet the requirements set forth in the monthly drivers score targets.

Job Purpose

Operating as a visible and accessible safety resource in the field, the Safety Technician focuses on strengthening a culture where safety is embedded in everyday operations. • Conduct routine and targeted site inspections to verify compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices while documenting findings and supporting corrective action follow-up.
• Communicate safety expectations clearly and professionally with personnel at all levels of the organization, including field crews, supervisors, and management, while fostering open dialogue regarding safety concerns and improvement opportunities.
• Participate in incident and near-miss (Good Catch) investigations by gathering relevant information, supporting SCAT DVM root cause analysis, and assisting with the development and implementation of corrective and preventive measures.
• Support the practical implementation of safety programs, procedures, and initiatives within the field, ensuring they are clearly understood, effectively applied, and aligned with operational needs.
• Build strong working relationships with frontline personnel by demonstrating credibility, approachability, and a collaborative mindset that encourages employee participation in safety initiatives.
• Accurately document field observations, inspections, hazard reports, and safety interactions while ensuring timely communication of key findings to supervisors and safety leadership.
• Maintain working knowledge of applicable safety regulations, company policies, and industry standards, and demonstrate the ability to apply these requirements effectively within field operations.
• Demonstrate strong situational awareness when working in active field environments, recognizing evolving work conditions and intervening appropriately to prevent potential incidents.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

• • Bachelors in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of progressive safety experience in construction, geotechnical, heavy civil, or related high-risk industries.
• Demonstrated experience working directly with frontline field crews and supervisors in active work environments.
• Experience conducting worksite inspections, hazard assessments, and safety observations in dynamic field conditions.
• Experience participating in or supporting incident and near-miss investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective action development.
• Strong working knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, and industry best practices relevant to field operations.
• Demonstrated ability to identify hazards, evaluate risk, and implement practical control measures in operational environments.
• Proficiency in safety documentation, reporting systems, and digital safety management tools.
• Ability to review safety procedures and ensure alignment with regulatory and operational requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in active field environments and maintain a consistent presence supporting operational crews.
• Ability to provide constructive coaching and guidance to field personnel to reinforce safe behaviors and improve safety performance.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to address safety challenges while supporting operational objectives.

Work Environment

The Safety Technician performs duties in a combination of office, vehicle, aircraft, and field environments. The majority of time is spent supporting active sites which may include construction sites, industrial facilities, remote locations, and outdoor operational environments.

Field conditions may include:

• Uneven terrain, gravel, mud, and sloped ground.
• Exposure to varying weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, rain, snow).
• Industrial noise, moving equipment, and active work zones.
• Temporary work areas and remote job sites.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility clothing, and steel-toe boots are required in field environments.
