What is Soil Nailing?

Soil nailing is a slope stabilization method that reinforces steep or unstable slopes using a “top-down” process. Steel bars, called soil nails, are installed into the ground to create a stable support system. GeoStabilization International’s patented Soil Nail Launcher™ can fire 20-foot nails into the ground at speeds up to 250 mph. Nails can also be drilled or driven, allowing our crews to adapt to almost any soil condition, even as the project progresses. Each nail provides real-time soil data, letting our engineers adjust the design on site. Combined with grout, tendons, facing, and drainage, soil nails deliver a complete stabilization system that performs well even under seismic loading.

Soil Nail and Pinned Mesh Application

Applications

Soil nailing is used in a wide range of geotechnical challenges:

  • Slope Stabilization – Reinforces natural and man-made slopes to prevent failure.

  • Erosion & Landslide Control – Stops progressive soil loss before it threatens infrastructure.

  • Retaining Wall Support – Strengthens aging or damaged retaining walls and levees.

  • Emergency Repairs – Provides fast stabilization to reopen roads, railways, and other assets.

Types of Soil Nails

We adapt nail types to match each site’s conditions:

  • Self-Drilling Nails – Designed for collapsing soils or active slides; combine speed with strong pullout resistance.

  • Open Hole Nails – Installed with grout that bonds to surrounding soils, improving strength and reducing water infiltration.

  • Launched Nails – Fired into slopes with high velocity; ideal for fast installation and excellent shear strength in emergencies.

Advantages

Soil nailing offers multiple benefits compared to traditional wall systems:

  • Cost Savings – Typically less expensive than gravity or ground anchor walls.

  • Versatility – Works in soil, rock, and seismic conditions.

  • Speed – Requires minimal excavation, cutting project time significantly.

  • Durability – Can be paired with shotcrete or mesh facing for added structural strength and erosion control.

  • Adaptability – Real-time design adjustments ensure performance under changing field conditions.
