I-22 Emergency Landslide Repair & Landslide Mitigation

The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) announced a public bid for proposals from design-build-warranty companies for the construction of landslide mitigation and slope stabilization systems for I-22 West-Bound at MM 17.400.

The site in question was located at a 3:1 cut slope that had been reshaped a number of times in the past. Still, the slope remained unstable with surface sloughing, vertical scarping in multiple areas, and a heave at the toe of the slope adjacent to the road. This instability was due to various factors, including the current slope configuration, rainfall saturation, groundwater seepage, and local soil conditions.

Soil Nail and Shotcrete Walls for Slope Stabilization and Landslide Mitigation

GeoStabilization International® won the bid with a proposal for a landslide mitigation system that would feature a two-tiered soil nail wall (approximately 950 linear feet long and up to 40 feet tall). In total, this amounted to over 23,000 square feet of soil nail and shotcrete walls. The project required extensive excavation and the use of permanent soil nails with a global safety factor greater than 1.3.

As the project was an emergency, GeoStabilization’s crews had to work as quickly and efficiently as possible during the cold, rainy winter of Northern Alabama. To meet the tight deadline, GeoStabilization deployed several teams to the site, including project managers and project engineers. Thanks to their hard work and the use of various time-saving optimizations, the crews were able to complete the project not just on time but ahead of schedule.

Geohazard Mitigation for Transportation Infrastructure

Protecting roadways, railways, bridges, and other transportation infrastructure from geohazards is an essential part of GeoStabilization’s services. Thanks to the company’s innovative solutions and large fleet of limited-access equipment, the crews can often work on repairs without disrupting traffic. This makes it possible for critical infrastructure to return to full operation in days, not months.

24/7 Emergency Response for Geohazard Mitigation

GeoStabilization International® maintains a 24/7 emergency response capability across North America. This first emergency visit is free of charge and comes with no strings attached.

After inspecting the site and gathering data, GeoStabilization’s engineers will send you a personalized design with a fixed-cost proposal. If you approve the proposal, the company’s teams can often commence work as soon as two days after the landslide or other geohazard event. Engineering staff maintain a continuous onsite presence to ensure that everything goes according to the project’s parameters.

Upon completing the project, GeoStabilization issues a multi-year warranty inclusive of the materials, installation, performance, and stability of the repaired structure. No competitor mitigation company can provide this kind of warranty guarantee.
