Engineering News-Record (ENR) Midwest recently recognized GeoStabilization International® as their Specialty Construction “Best Project” award winner for the Fayette County Historic Courthouse Underpinning Project in Lexington, Kentucky.
During the revitalization of Lexington, Kentucky’s downtown area, the historic Fayette County Courthouse required significant renovations to accommodate additional planned retail and restaurant space. GeoStabilization provided an innovative approach for limited access shoring for the project. The design incorporated vertically grouted micropiles that optimized the principle of the soil arching to limit soil flow through the system, which, coupled with battered micropiles along the building’s foundation, ensured the structural integrity of the foundation once the micropile system was exposed. This valued-engineered micropile “A-Frame” innovation allowed the project to proceed on schedule and provided significant cost-savings on the project.
